nyc chain lock cutting help.

i have an old nyc chain kryptonite lock, my roomate locked it up a while ago and lost the key and it's just been sitting around, so i want to cut the lock and put my own on it. what is the best or cheapest way to do this?

Here are some ideas.

The best way: plasma torch. Good luck finding one to use. Try welding suppliers. You can do it with power tools but you will burn through blades really fast.

Plasma torch.. if you get hard up you can send it to me and I will cut it (as long as it's not attached to a bike)

would a normal oxy/acetalene setup do the trick as well?

Nullius 12-14-05 10:50 PM

Just use an angle grinder, the edge of the disk will go through it in a couple of minutes. It's noisy and will throw a lot of sparks, but if you've got a good space it should be pretty easy.

if you have time and energy to waist, a hardened hacksaw will do the trick. The angle grinder would be my choice. You might go through a couple cutting discs with it, and a couple blades with the hacksaw.

pick it!

Or, you know, a bic pen ;)

before you bust open that lock:

1. Register the bike and lock with kryptonite. and take tons of "before" pictures
2. Proceed to demolish lock
3. Take a shizload of "after" pictures and send them all to Kryptonite.
4. Then cash in on Kryptonite's guarantee program and become the richest BF member.

angle grinder will do it in under a minute...
dremel can do it as well, but it'll take a little longer, and unless you find the oversized cutting discs (which i've had trouble finding) you'll have trouble getting the last 1/8th inch or so but it's doable... and expect to use several discs...

HereNT 12-15-05 02:23 AM

It might be easier to cut through two of the links on the chain with one of the above mentioned methods, then put your own lock on... But I am completely talking out of my ass here...

cutting the chain involves four cuts (each side of two links) while cutting the lock only needs one or two cuts (never ****ed with one of the little kryptos)
also, cutting the lock is a little easier since there's more of it, meaning you can step on it, put it in a vice, etc while cutting it... cutting just the chain gets a little tricky since you generally have to hold it tight while cutting it, then when it finally gets thru you have bits of chain flying everywhere...

helvetica 12-15-05 02:59 AM

bic pen.

shants 12-15-05 09:24 AM

if you don't want to buy an angle grinder, they sell abrasive cutting disks with a special arbor for use in a regular drill. $3.85 or some **** and i was able to cut through a link of my NYC fahgettaboutit (or however the **** you spell it) in about 5 minutes, being careful about it.
