Makeshift Fender

I just rode back through that slush and my ass is soaking. It's going to be like this tomorrow morning, so I need to make some kind of fender for myself. Im guessing a soda bottle and some coat hangers. Anyone else do this? Tips or pics?

if you slice a 2-liter into strips and duct tape them together, it should be strong enough without coat hangers to last the day. just feed it through your seat stays and tape it to your downtube. coat hanger seems like a good idea though.

In that puma "messenger" DVD, he does a little how-to on his "infamous ghetto gaurd," which looks like a sprite bottle with a coathanger taped to it. my real (plastic) fenders were $10, and snap on and off, its worth considering.

I bolted a milkjug mudflap to the back of my rack, but if you have a rack that already catches most of the ****. If you don't have a rack... Maybe slice a 2-liter in half and lash/Duct tape between the seat stays?

I wrap a piece of cardboard (like half-fender length by slightly-wider-than-the-gap-between-your-seat-stays) in packing tape and fold it lengthwise. I cut two notches in one end and wedge the sucker between my seat stays above the brake bride with the seat stay tubes in the notches. It works kinda' alright. I would suggest taping it to the seat tube to keep it from drooping onto your rear wheel.

I tried the "infamous ghetto guard" myself. The pop bottle duct tape coat hanger thing, and it was hard to get it in place and stay. I used some thread and tied it to the saddle bars then to the fender to balance it. Looks real dorky but surprisingly my rear stayed somewhat dry. It's good cause you could just throw it away afterwards or whatever

My father reinforced his seatpost-mount fender by adding a piece of antenna wire. He bent it into a U,then bent the loop down 90 deg, then bent the ends 90 deg. He put the loop under the fender and glued it,then zip-tied the bent ends to the seatstays. Kept it in place real well.

nice pegs...who are you carrying on that?....My girl likes to ride on my handlebars, but sometimes it's hard to maneuver and see around her

oh...and I know this is a makeshift fender thread, but I just got the Planet Bike clip-on Freddy Fenders for like 5 dollars. I am more satisfied than I thought I would be with them

i cut a 2 litre bottle in half, poked four holes, insert zipties and fasten around seat rails...not real greast but it eliminates butt and back spray....Im digging the election sign fenders haha and it just so happens that up here in Canada its election time and fender season...does it get any better?

I have had really good luck making fenders to fit tight clearance bikes using hot wheels track. You can make em up with stays and all the goodies or just duct tape one on the seat-tube seat stay bridge. They are nice and flexible so they don't bust in the cold and the orange colour is all the rage with the kids these days. The only downside is the toy collector geeks who react incredulously that you could do that to such a piece of toy history.

there are mounts for both the front and rear that are attached through the break holes(it comes with the hex bolts and nuts if you don't have them). The mount is attached on the front to the fender by a large 'finger bolt/knob' (one with a knob) you can finger to get on and off), and the rear fender in the back kind of slides through the mount. The front end of the rear fender also clips onto the seat tube (to keep it from sliding off). You can actually take the fenders off of the mounts I suppose(without a wrench or anything), and then just 'clip them on', but I won't be leave those mounts on when I'm riding without the fenders. The whole setup can be pretty easily taken off or put on in like 2 min.

this is my first official pair of fenders, and I must say...****...fenders are fuking cool....especially to have a front one on top of the butt protector.... I felt invincible( and COMFortAbLE) rolling at top speeds through the slush. These are now my bike's #1 accessory (besides maybe my rear blink blink for night)
