To coast or not to coast

I ran across this blog entry this morning - kind of funny, if you ask me:

i love how OWBG is all over the NJS stuff.

& here's the first commenter "My not-very-humble opinion: If you are gonna ride fixed on the street, you NEED a front brake; no ifs, ands, or buts. Yeah, I know the Cool Kids do not have brakes, but they are secretly the Fool Kids."

oooooooh, that hurt :P

I can coast ... as long as I unclip and "hug" the frame with my legs.

I like this part:"They look elegant and classic, and they boost their riders' self-esteem by implying skill and daring."

I don't know if I agree, it just makes me giggle.

I do agree with that. That clean loop of chain sans drealiures has always apealed to me aesthetically, and while I doubt it effects many people's opinion of me, riding fixed does do something for my self esteem to which is different. I don't think riding fixed is difficult, but it is different, it's a specific skill, and adding that to my ever-growing list of cycling skills does make me feel good about myself.

that blog is awesome. Thanks HereNT. Going in my favorites bookmarks.

I do like the clean lines, but that's purely my minimalist, retro aesthetics.

I think going ss, and then fixed, boosted my riding self-esteem. Then again, some of my more foolhardy stunts have happened while riding fixed. I don't think of myself as a skilled rider. I know that there's so much to learn.

I'd equate it with learning a martial art. I know a little more than a complete newbie and feel comfortable talking about those basics and showing them the little bit I know. But I defer to people with more knowledge and experience than I have, and try to learn as much from them as I can without completely jumping too far beyond my skillset.

Some people ask too many questions. Borrow a friends ride. If you like it, fix your bike up, if you don't, move on with life.

Too much god**** handholding.
