Wait... let's get back to the poutine here, which is far more important.

So, yeah, wait, I can get poutine in NYC? I don't understand about this Pomme Frittes place. It says Belgian fries. Not poutine. Damnit, where can I get some of that sweet sweet poutiney goodness!?!?!?!?

Pommes Frites is a belgian fry place but they do serve poutine. It's the only place I've found in the U.S. that serves it.

do you remember when they joined forces and came up with the short-lived name, "conservative reform alliance"? add "party" to the end and you got c.r.a.p.

another thing, if quebec separates what'll montreal call the hockey team?

Here's a stupid question from an admitted non-hockey fan: Why are the Montreal Candiens known as "The Habs"?

"Habs is an abbreviation of "les habitants," the informal name given to the original settlers of New France, dating back to the 17th Century. So it seems a natural nickname for the Montreal Canadiens, established in 1909 as a French-Canadian hockey team appealing to the city's Francophone community."

Ahhh...that makes more sense than trying to figure out how Habs came from Montreal Canadiens. Next question: Why do two NHL teams have the same name, i.e.; Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver Canucks which is another way of saying Canadian?

I'm wayyyyyyy in on this. I know nothing of authentic Canadian cuisine, but this thread's gotten me very hungry.

Also, Joe, the Berghoff's closing! Horrible news for Chicago diners.

shocker! that place was an institution... some of the waiters there had to be in their 70's. i didn't like waiting in line to get in, but brats and beer were amazing.

Das tut mir lied!

EDIT: i think i prefer the Brauhaus in Lincoln Sq though... no lines, and a smokin live German band that does Abba covers.

Re: les habitants, specifically the H in the Canadiens CH logo (club du hockey) was alleged to stand for habitants.

Poutine is the BIZ!

Sadly, the Leafs down the Habs by one goal at the Bell Centre that night. I received grief for both my Canadiens shirt and my B's cab because they were on the skids at the time. Man, I can't stand Toronto fans. They're like Yankees fans but losers.

can anyone point me to a hockey schedule broken down by provinces (esp quebec)? we've never been to a game so we might as well check it out.

I think you'll have a hard time finding one. I mean there's NHL, AHL (I think there are Canadian AHL clubs, right?), OHL, WHL, QMJHL, probably a few other semi-pros, and then you get into amateur and collegiate hockey.

It's like asking for a basketball schedule broken down by state here in the US.

i'm shocked by the almost total absence of candian members replying to this thread... wtf guys?

go to any sports bar in Toronto during a leafs game and the majority (even the welfare bums) are cheering on the visiting team %90 of the time. I choose to ride my fixie instead on those nights regardless (just to keep it on topic)... wait that wasn't the topic at all Quebecois? phsh... vive la Green Party!!

I was just trying to give you an example of what a 'bloc-like' party would be in the States. So IF the Dems in Cali wanted their own country...some people would care others would want to let 'em go...just a hypothetical scenario

ummm.

i just got off of work from the Blackhawks vs. Blues game. The hawks are horse manure straight up!

anyways...

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League is one of the best leagues to see future NHL stars. But, if you are going to be there in Feb. you should just watch the olympics like the rest of the world since hockey won't be played then.

I have a picture of me trackstanding inside of the molson centre in front of the picture of the 2003 Habs. I took it at the NACCCs a couple years back.

that's nothing. for many years we had two football teams in the cfl that had the same name... the ottawa roughriders and the saskatchewan roughriders. keep in mind the league only has only 9 teams.

Um..can you purchase a couple things of 'poutine sauce' for me? I would be eternally grateful. If there is more than one brand you should ask other people in the aisle which is best. I'll repay you by making some poutine for us to eat.

My friend Kristen just got a brand new deep frier for xmas!

Actually, I knew about the two Roughriders teams in the CFL, but since I figured no one watches the CFL, including Canadians, that I'd stick to odd hockey team names like the Montreal Canadiens. That'd be like a US sports team calling themselves the New York Americans. But then again, we do have the Ducks.

you'll also need real cheese curds. joints that use mozzarella are crap.

get good fresh ones at la vieille europe, south of mondo frites. they should still be squeaky.

trackasaurus - I am going up to a place called the 'mars cheese factory' in Wisconsin to get some real cheese curds on Saturday. I know all about the squeak.
