calling Ceya (another tubular question)

Here's a whole passle of tubular questions for ya:

How much of the old glue do I need to pick off the rims before gluing a new tire on? I have picked off all the flaky loose stuff, but there is still a lot of thin, slightly tacky film on the metal.

Should I take solvent to it and get down to the bare, anodized metal? Is there something less awful than solvent to remove it?

no leave the old glue on, as long as it's not loose, you need a layer on there anyway before you mount the tire.

Thanks df! Time to glue them up! I had a set of araya aero rims mtd. to old D/A NJS hubs that I wanted to glue up and use on the new eBay score.

I've been waiting to really take it out until it was properly attired.

Hmm. Marcus @ Yojimbo's told me to take all the old stuff off, then lightly score the rim, then proceed with the layers of glue.

He recommended acetone to get rid of the last of it.

i've done it both ways, and never had a problem with leaving the old stuff on.

one trick to make sure the loose stuff is off is to hit it with a green scrubby pad. fast, but makes a mess.

cool, and i assume you know that you need to put a layer of glue on the rim, and the tire, and let them sit for 24 hours before actually mounting the tire?

Cool. Is there any kind of Sheldon-esque tubular resource online?

there is already a layer of dried glue on the tire from being previously mounted. It is still fresh and very tacky so it is good. There is the aforementioned layer of dried glue on the rim...I just spread a layer of fresh glue on one rim and am letting it sit for a half hour - I had planned to mount the tire at that point...sound okay?

man is it stinky in my apartment all of a sudden. Maybe an open flame or scented candle will get rid of this toxic smell.

There's a thread stickied at the top of the classic and vintage forum entitled: "totally tubular". Check it for more fun.

Sorry for late response. I don't come here often..LOL

DolFace is correct , you don't have to scrap any off. Wow more people are riding tubies here..

Come my children I will read the 10 laws of tubies..LOL

I haven't let my tires sit for 24hrs in years.. As you get to doing it more less time waiting.

S/F,
CEYA!

Save the grief and mess of gluing and use Tufo glue tapes... prestretch the tire on a dry rim overnight, run the tape on the wheel on which you're mounting the tire, mount the tire... and you're in clover.

The Tufo tapes really are the best thing since sliced bread, especially the Extreme.
