kennethalan 01-07-06 01:11 AM

Avoid those last two and you should be ok. If you are able to I'd say bring your bike. I'm sure something will be going on in Austin during that period of time. If not, we'll have to make something up.

sof5000 01-07-06 04:06 AM

I gotta go to houston to see some family and I gotta go to galveston to get my winter surf on. im gonna be in austin for most of the time im in the state, anything in particular I should check out,(bookstores, bike shops, record shops, comic book stores, abandoned buildings, crazy woods, local legends, punk rock clubs, goth clubs, hip hop clubs.....I just need fun stuff to do there.)

(bookstores, bike shops, record shops, comic book stores, abandoned buildings, crazy woods, local legends, punk rock clubs, goth clubs, hip hop clubs.....I just need fun stuff to do there.)

Bookstore - Book People, 6th and Lamar - across the street from Whole Foods

Record Shops - Waterloo, also at 6th and Lamar - pretty much the only local record shop left
Cheapo Discs (or something like that), 9th and Lamar - xlent used selection

Comic Book Stores - There's one on 51st and Lamar - I forgot the name of it.

Abandoned Buildings - Hell, Guadalupe is practically abondoned now. You can thank the kids at UT for that one. The Intel structure downtown. The parking garage at Guadalupe and 12th.

Crazy Woods - Austin has a buttload of parks. You won't miss them.

Local Legends - Kenneth Alan of course....

Punk Rock Clubs - Emo's, live music venue - Red River and 6th. Casino El Camino - best burgers in town (even for veggies), Red River and 6th. Jackalope, good atmosphere for brews/drinks - on 6th.

Goth Club - I don't quite know where these kids hang out, Elysium? - Red River near 6th

Hip Hop - The only ones I know of is Spiros, Red River and 7th.

Jamtastic 01-07-06 10:43 AM

H-town will rock your sox off. Or maybe your pants off. Forget what these other arses say.hahah. (austin is the bees knees but Houston is still alright by me,)

wearyourtruth 01-07-06 10:53 AM

austin is definately worth riding in... houston is alright (it's my hometown) it's a freakin BIG city though, parts of it are cool and parts of it are awful though. galveston is a cool city to visit, imo. the gulf is ugly there thanks to the mississippi river dumping all it's crap right north of us, but the city itself has some cool stuff, lots of old buildings, not sure how the riding is there though, other than flat...

biff 01-07-06 12:40 PM

Wups, I forgot bike shops...

I dig Freewheeling at 24th and San Gabriel. Definitely the densest shop in town.

digadog 01-07-06 09:50 PM

Everything mentioned above plus:

Bookstore - Monkeywrench Books (100 E. North Loop Blvd.)

Record stores - Sound On Sound (106 E. North Loop Blvd.), End Of An Ear (2209 S. First). Alot of great records stores 'closed' down awhile ago...

Clubs/bars - Beerland (7th and Red River), Room 710 (7th and Red River), The Parlor (100-B E. North Loop Blvd.), Hole in the Wall (2538 Guadalupe). Again alot of the great clubs 'closed' down years back.

Movie Theaters - Alamo DraftHouse (the best ones downtown...409-B Colorado) , The Dobie (2025 Guadalupe).

Food - Mother's Cafe (43rd./Duval), Wheatsville Co-op (31st./Guadalupe), Magnolia Cafe (2304 Lake Austin Blvd.)

WhiskeyTango 01-07-06 10:47 PM

If you're gonna hit the Parlor/Sound on Sound/Monkeywrench Books, you'll be right across the street from the Bike Peddler, fixie-friendly and locally owned. Be sure to drop in.

sof5000 01-07-06 11:40 PM

thanks so much for your help, how the **** could I forget monkey wrench books, if anyones down for riding in houston or austin throw me a line or a private message.

Comics - Dragons Lair on Burnet, the one in the Dobie mall and the one at Lamar and Oltorf.

Abandoned buildings - the Reddy-Ice building on like 9th and Red River is always fun, lots more if you look. train bridge is alot of fun too.

Bars/Punx - Jackalope, Horseshoe Lounge, Hole in the Wall, Lovejoys (still open?), Parlor, Barfly's, Emo's, 710, Headhunters, Deep Eddy etc...

DARTBOWL MONDAY DOLLAR NIGHT!

Bookstores - Book People, Monkeywrench

Bike Shops - Freewheelin has some cool ****, and Im guessin alot more stuff they won't tell you about, Bike Peddler is nice and by Sound on Sound, East Side Pedal Pushers on e 6th, Yellowbike Project.

Im hungover i'll think of more later.

onetwentyeight 01-08-06 03:35 PM

Theres a club called emo's? *chuckle*

noriel 01-08-06 08:30 PM

I'm in Houston. When will you be in town? I'm in Rice Village / West U, but my buddy and I hit up Downtown at night. PM me when you get in town, hopefully I won't be on call when you're in.

SamHouston 01-08-06 08:59 PM

If you hook up with Houston people have a meal I'm aching for at La Tapatia on Richmond St west of Montrose (it aint the same at the one in the core which while more of a bar just doesn't do the food quite right)...oh man it hurts only having that once a year or so, so sad. Some of the best Tex-mex you'll ever have. Of course if you find yourself out past midnite just go a few blocks east of Montrose on Richmond and try Chapultepecs, the best 24hr tex-mex around.

It was long ago but manys the nights they let us keep partying til dawn there. I guess since they didn't need a clock being open 24 hrs that a 2am last call didn't occur to them.

(bookstores, bike shops, record shops, comic book stores, abandoned buildings, crazy woods, local legends, punk rock clubs, goth clubs, hip hop clubs...
I'm in SW Houston, so I'll list stuff that's local to me. Where are you going to stay in Htown?

Generically, there's Half-price books scattered around town, and they've got vinyl there, too, if you can wade through Linda Rondstat and Kenny Rogers. We've got a pretty big HP books here in the village. I think there's a quarter price books on Shepherd, right next to Procycle.

Bike shops- I'm partial to West U cycles on Rice, just off of Kirby (Right next to Buffalo Wild Wings if you're in the mood for wings). There's other shops, like Cyclone cycles, West End, Daniel Boone, and Urban Bicycle Gallery, and Procycle on Shepherd who's got the most fixed gear/track selection, but it's like going into someone's garage - Dan's got a fortune in parts just lying around.

Record shops - haven't looked at vinyl in a while, but there's Soundwaves, I guess.

Comic book stores - there's Nan's comics on 59N and Shepherd, and Third Planet on 59S bwtween Kirby and Wakeforest. There's Bedrock comics on Westheimer just off of Hilcroft.

Not too sure of abandoned buildings, maybe north and east of downtown.

For clubs, you could always check out http://www.houstonpress.com/

I know some of the guys here wanted to check out the St. Arnold's Brewery, maybe we could get a ride going up there when you come down. They've got a cool tie dyed Bentley that's usually parked around here.

sof5000 01-09-06 02:31 AM

thanks for the kindness, I'll deffinatley PM you when I get down there, a little warning though, I'm too young to drink and I'm vegan so if any activities you might suggest revovle around drinking or eating cows whole, you might want to back away. But yeah, if anyone wants anything from NYC before I leave pm me also.......AND yet again thank everyone for all the suggestions.

If good surf is what you want, then Galveston isn't exactly great. If you want some decent surf, head down to Surfside or Matagorda. If Galveston is your only option, after surfing you could tear up the Strand area.

Orikal 01-09-06 12:30 PM

Let us know when you're in town; maybe we could get a group ride together?

houston's a great place. sort of.
someone listed pretty much all the good shops,
save for houston bicycle company, bikesport and west end cycles...which
are all worth stopping in if you've got nothing better to do. i don't remember
what's around as far as veggie/vegan eats anymore. quan yin way out on bellaire
was good as far as i can recall. sticking around the montrose/heights/museum district
will afford you a cool/small enough area to just explore on your own.

go to sound exchange on richmond for records. more garage rock
than you could ever want.

bring me my other three bikes, all my clothes, my guitars, books,
records and friends from new york. and an unbroken leg. thanks.

sof5000 01-16-06 07:17 PM

noriel 01-17-06 09:38 AM

what's your schedule like, misterH? let's go for some racing.... since I've just started to do backwards circles, we've been riding around tagging spots with the circles. sof, maybe we could help out NYC bike punk out. I need to check out the exhibit, I ride by it all the time. PM me guys, I usually ride at night, stop at bars and just hang around downtown racing buses and irritating drivers. We bring a camera along whenever we see something we need to shoot.
