park tool freewheel remover

If you removed the axle it might be easier to jury rig something. Although just go get the tool is my suggestion, I think they're 6 dollars or something like that.

hammer and big ass flathead screwdriver on the notches.oh yeah, and moxie

kurremkarm 01-08-06 11:50 PM

It's hard enough with the tool. I bet any bike shop would loosen it for u for free or next to free if you handed them the wheel.

moxie tastes like ass.. it is like old jager without the booze part.

replace "big ass flathead screwdriver" with "chisel" if the freewheel has no notches (the really cheap ones). that's what we do at the shop. not too much fun.

just sayin'

The remover tool works great, however, if you have much in the way of axle spacers on the side with the free-wheel you may have to remove the hub locknut and spacers to get the tool in the notches.

yeah, there's a trick. slip the tool into the notches, over the axle. put a washer and nut on top of it, holding it into the notches--once they're stripped you're in a dilly of a pickle, as it were. once the tool is secured on, put the tool in a vice (or, if you don't have a vice, a big crescent wrench) and unscrew the freewheel. the vice is helpful because you get additional torque from the wheel, but i've removed freewheels with a wrench w/o too much swearing.

that place didnt even have ALE-8... **** that ****

genericbikedude 01-09-06 09:36 AM

If its one of the cheapo freewheels without the four prong tool interface, you have to use a pin spanner to take the cog and bearing seal off, then put the screw-on body in a vice and twist. "destructive removal."
