opinions on minoura workstands
 

More specifically the minoura rsx or the minoura rs1200
they are both on sale at nashbar and I was thinking about buying one... has anyone used either one. i think I am leaning towards the rsx even though you have to take the front wheel off to use it. any suggestions??

Work stands are just so expensive and building your own is a lot of fun - and cheap.

Also, sorry the picture is so big.

ya the only reason that I was looking at the stands is because they are on sale... 49 for the rsx...39 for the rs1200

Neither of those seem very sturdy.
I'm going to resubmit my suggestion of building your own.

I have the Performance version of the Minoura 1200 (differs somewhat but same basic principle) and like it very much - so much that I gave away a Park consumer stand that I never used. The type of stands that you are looking at are reasonably sturdy, hold the bike at a good height for working, and you never have to worry about crushing a seat tube or TT with a Park-style clamp.

I got one for xmas. They're alright but not great. However for that kinda money they're fricking amazing.

Do you have any suggestions on building your own, or links to instructions?

3/4 inch plumbing pipe and the necessary joints.
Goes together as easy as K'Nex or Legos.
The "design" is up to you, although I must say mine has been working great.
And then you need a Pony 3/4 Inch Pipe Clamp Fixture (found in the tool section of Home Depot).

Did you have to do anything special for the part that holds the actual frame? Or was that part of the clamp/another home depot find?

Well, yes.
I forgot about that.
I cut two 2x4s into small blocks and then cut out a trench. I lined the blocks with old innertubes for protection and then screwed the pads into the orange clamps.
That part is a little tricky.
