Sheldon Brown says "a fixed-gear rider will learn to 'post' over bumps without breaking stride". This sounds worth knowing about, but he does not explain it. Does anyone know what posting is?
|
it's horseback riding lingo for raising yourself above the saddle while maintaining gait. in otherwords, you'll stand up a little bit but keep pedaling at the same cadence and moving at the same speed.
|
posting is pedaling out of the saddle.
when i hit bumps i get out of the saddle to use my legs as shock absorbers, rather than have my ass absorb the shock. takes some time getting used to doing it fluidly if you're not used to riding fixed. |
seems like the context in which it appears makes it pretty apparent -- "On any road bike, the rider must learn to un-weight the saddle to ride over bumps. Most cyclists coast to do this. A fixed-gear rider will learn to "post" over bumps without breaking stride."

Chimbly, you’re just trying to find and keep the dream of horses
And the song she wrote was chimbly and the dream of horses Dream of horses You dream of horses |

Chimbly was a teenage rebel.
ps- tickets for the B&S/New Pornographers North America tour go on sale at 10am tomororw. woo hoo! |
Ride bikes! riding horses is cruelty to animals *only in my opinion, which I will not force on anyone"
But in context, posting means to unweight your butt and place your weight over your legs. With Fixed gear, your legs keep spinning, like out of the saddle hammering, but without all the hammering. |
ride bikes, shoot and eat horses.

Oh, and Shants. I love you. and the DC shows are the weekend of Monstertrack. though perhaps 3/4 monstertrack, then 3/5 and 3/6 B&S in DC? i dunno. sounds a little stressful. tix are $35 for the show here in your nation's capitol. |
It's what bike nerds do when they're not riding.
|
like we are now.

I know about unweighting the saddle - on my geared bike. I thought there might be some extra step or consideration with fixies. I just checked the dictionary, which defines post as: "to rise forward and upward from a riding saddle when one diagonal pair of the horse's legs is off the ground and to return to the saddle when the opposite diagonal pair is off the ground supporting one's weight primarily by the knees and thighs." If cranks are like horses legs (only less edible), does this mean let the rear pedal lift me and then let the same pedal lower me when it's coming down at front? Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse. :D Just passing the time learning until my Pake gets here.

Yeah I was used to coasting while unweighting on a freewheel. it took less than a week to become comfortable doing the same thing while pedaling, and when it came I didn't have to think about it, I just did it.
|
I should be grossed out, but instead I'm really craving deer brains. weird
Ride bikes, shoot and eat horses & hipster-doofus-es :)

back to the posting thing.. I always picture BMX/4-cross riders fluidly peddling over berms and such on a dirt course.
