Paint job prices?
I'm looking to get a frame painted. I'm curious what other people have paid for single colour paintwork (ie, not powdercoating) so I can judge if I'm getting hosed or not.

I think I'm sending my gios over to cyclart when I get my replacement
decals in. It's going to run ~ $325. That poor cyclops cat!

I payed 80$cdn for a a pint of 3part automotive paint.... base colour, hardener and reducer and a pint of clear coat.... took it to the bodyshop across the road along with a case of Kieth's and that was it...oh, and that was to have it blasted too....

$325 for a complete restoration, including shipping back and forth.
Not the cheapest, but I've seen their work and they do an awesome job.
I've done it before to lesser steeds, but no way is my Gios getting a rattlecan job.

$100cdn (taxes in) for primer, one Imron colour, and clear coat (stripping/blasting not included) seems to be the going rate at the autobody places I called that would actually do it. Powdercating is less ($85+tax, includes media blasting) but (IMO) looks poopy.

WHy is powder-coating cheaper? I was under the impression it was a harder finish. can someone explain to me the exact difference?

It's cheaper because there are less steps. Just blast, clean, coat, bake. Where as paint adds at least 2 or 3 more steps. And you're right about it being a harder finish. Paint is like colored glue...it mearly dries on to the metal whereas the powder coat actually bonds to the metal.

So why is it seen as "not as good"? does it not create as nice of a finish? I have heard makes lug shorelines look not as prominent because it is thicker... true?

It is very possible that powder coat goes on thicker, but I can't say for sure.

suppose one wanted to restore a 1970s Chesini, fully and completely, up to it's original factory appearance... how might one track down the decals for this project? not just the Chesini logo decals, but also the specific and impossible to find little decal that states something about the bike winning some award in 1973 "Bici d'Oro - yada yada yada"? i'd imagine i'd spend half of my life tracking down originals of this particular decal, can it be recreated somehow? can all decals be recreated somehow?
next question, same Chesini: it is fully chromed, with a strange transluscent coating of electric blue that is transparent and metallic looking... it's not quite paint. what is it? what's it cost to re-do? who even restores such special creatures? and, most importantly, how much would i be shelling out to do this -- decals and all?

yeah, i checked cyclart briefly. i got pretty disheartened when i saw all the figures. yikes!
i'm not ready for a restoration now, as the bike's cosmetic appearance still has approximately a decade of life still in it according to my standards. i just want to have a way out, should i ruin it a bit more. the thing deserves to be behind glass somewhere, maybe just for me though...
