Kickstand??
 

OK here's my ish:
Next week I'm starting work on a bike to build up my own fixie.
Problem - I stripped the entire frame of all it's decades old parts except for the kickstand.
It's an old Schwinn Vintage (tad on the heavy side but she sure is pretty).
The only page I found on removing a kickstand mentioned having an adjustable wrench big enough to go around the kickstand tube. I don't have one. Any help on this one would be swell b/c having a nearly stripped frame staring at me is starting to get to me LoL.

Is it one of the old schwinnies with the kickstand actually welded on? If so, what's the method of removal you're planning-- heat and pop?

The kickstand tube is welded on, I'm not so sure what's going on inside the tube though. I know that if I pull up on the kickstand it kind of comes out so it can't be inside it too securely but it still baffles me.
I'm gonna talk to some people around here too see what they think.

You need a special tool

But perhaps by looking at that you can figure out another way. It seems you have to push it in, the remove a pin thats holding it all in that tube.

Eh, the bike is heavy anyway. You might as well keep it. A conversation starter.

Kickstands ****ing rule. You can like totally put your bike down without leaning it on something. I'd get a kickstand, but my bike can only have parts from slovakia on it.

Just go into a shop and ask them if they have the Schwinn tool and will take the arm out for you. It is not worht buying the tool for one use and it is a pain in the but to push the tension spring in far enouogh to get the pin(look at it from the bottom) out of the tube without it.
While I would never put a kickstand on a bike* it is pretty handy to have one.

*OK, I did it once. It is great, roll up to the bagel shop, flick the stand and go in. No looking for a rack or leaning against something hoping it won't fall over.

I removed one once off a black Schwinn Continental. I just slipped a hacksaw into the joint and cut away, at one point it was loose so I just rocked it a little and viola, came right off. This left a couple wounds on the bottom of the stays though, I touched them up with some blood red paint. I thought it was cool..."Look, my bike is injured!" but nobody cared.

You can use a big c-clamp as well. I would find a washer just big enough to slide over the kickstand and slide it on up to that circular plate, then use a clamp (or find a buddy with the adjustable wrench, don't hacksaw your dang frame. terrible idea) to push that washer in and with a free hand use needlenose pliers to pull the pin out. The washer helps but it sounds like you may have to be creative with the rest.

Cool. I always wondered how to remove the schwinn kickstands. The one on my cruiser doesn't stay up.

The only access I have to *****in tools right now is for set-building for shows and not for bike chopping sooo I think I'll probably end up down at the lbs in the next week.

huh, my schwinn...all i needed was a hex wrench. obviously, different situations here.
