39x17 oh yeah.
So due to axle issues with the infamous Suzue Junior hub, I'm not riding my normal wheel. I don't have a lockring tool so that means my normal 15 tooth cog is stuck on the unusable wheel. I do however have a suicide wheel ($10 road wheel with campy hub and tubular rim, the person who sold it to me had it setup as a suicide wheel, i got it for road use, or at least the hub.) with a 17 tooth cog. So last night I took it for a spin to get out and to make sure I wouldn't have any surprises on my way to work this morning. Talk about spinning.
The quick acceleration is nice, but the top speed isn't. Oh well, I'll hopefully get a new axle (And lockring tool while I'm at it) tonight, so I'll be back to my normal (still spinny) gearing. |
work on a smooth spin and high rpms and you can go fast. before spending most (or, well...all) of my time on a fixed gear, i spent a lot of time on a geared road bike with a cycle computer. or a speedometer, you could say...that was almost all i used it for. anyway, i chose one gear on that bike and stayed with that. it was 39/17. at first i was either slower or bouncing around in the saddle, but after working on the spin and getting to, i dunno 120 rpm (that's what, 3 turns a second, right?) and doing that smoothly, i could get up to ~25 mph, sometimes up to ~30 mph.
it could be good for you. |
one time i used needlenose pliers to get my da lockring off. went pretty well.

I was running 40x17 for a while and it was alot of fun for skidding around town but now I am using a 44x17 combo and that is much better....my top speed so far is 31mph which i think comes out to about 145rpm...spinning is fun once you get a hang of it...I'm not quite there yet but i can get a smooth spin for a short amount of time at those speeds
