Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Reason for sweep on Risers and Flat bars

Pretty much what the title says.
Why is back/upwards sweep good?

At least for back sweep, it tends to be easier on your wrists. Holding onto a straight bar and pushing and pulling on it all day will hurt your wrists after a while. Thus, the sweep.

For some folks, that's just not enough though. Enter the On-one Mary bar and Jones H-bar.

LBK has her riser bars turned down and they give her bike a really different look.

Some folks find that a little more sweep on mtb bars let them get a more natural angle for the hands/wrists. After hurting my hand/wrist in a crash I have become uptight about hand position and find that more sweep/bend (10-15 degrees) is more comfortable than a standard XC bar (5-7 degrees.) If you want a flat bar with lots of sweep, check out the surly torsion bar. They are steel, made by Nitto, and have a 15 degree sweep.

Ditto neverwrite. The more natural and relaxed hand/wrist position. Oddly enough, I quite like riding on the shoulders of drops.
