Does anyone have a pattern for a cycling cap to knit or have an idea where I might track one down?

if you're looking for a hat that works great with helmets, no brim though, i love the "Basic Cable" hat in SnB Nation. It's awesome, esp. if you knit on Karabella Aurora 8, the springiest wool ever.

is it possible to just knit a beanie with added earlaps and brim? i have some vintage wool cycling caps with fold-down earlaps and a brim.. i can photo one and maybe someone who knits could help from there? im sure just making a pattern or something (do you knit from a pattern? i am clueless...) would be easy, it's just a few panels and then a brim and earlaps..

i wouldn't knit panels and then stitch them together, that's a pain.

i'd say just knit it in the round from the bottom up. if you want earflaps, pick up and knit from the bottom after you've finished the body.

the Kittyville hat in SnB is a good base for an earflap beanie.

Ok. I'll out myself for this one. My girlfriend made me this one. It's warm as ^&#* and still fits under a helmet. Unfortunately the extreme warmth and lack of earflaps are kind of a funky combination, but she's agreed to attempt one with flaps one of these days.



It's the felted baseball cap pattern from Hilltop Yarn but with a shorter bill. They don't have the pattern available on their site but I'm sure you could call or e-mail to order it. The pattern isn't free, but it should only be a few bucks.

Yes, knit round and grafted at the crown. You could also start with the earflaps knitting up from the bottom and then cast on the head sts at the top of the flaps for a completely seamless line. If I have the piece in front of me, I can usually reverse-engineer the pattern.

I actually was looking at that pattern from hilltop and think I might try that. I think knitting in the round is the only to not have it looked jacked up. Well, I'm off to the yarnstore.

For anyone curious on how it's constructed it's knit in the round from the bottom up, and the stitches are picked up to add the bill. I'm not a knitter, but I think as projects go it's probably pretty easy. Sizing it to be felted seems like the tricky part, and that's probably where the pattern would be most helpful. I think anyone experienced with knitting hats could probably do something similar with no pattern though. It just might take a couple of trys. She used Manos del Uraguay for the yarn, which felted up really nicely.

The downside to felting is that you don't know how something is going to felt up until you throw it in the washer, and once you've done that you can't just unravel it and start over. This is the extent of my knowledge about the project, but if anyone has other questions I can ask the expert.
