staring somebody down for walking their bike is stupid. period.

many is the time i've had to walk my dog AND my bike. which is no mean feat when you gotta pick up the business, while on the phone. it's a total ******-fest.

edit: i'd love to learn how to ride fixed with the dog. i'm way to sketched to try it, though. i'd be afraid he'd put something in the spokes and F himself up. :eek:

the worst part about walking the bike when I'm with the girl is that my true love gets lonely and will flat or throw a chain in protest the next day. Its really frustrating.

yep. truer words were never spoken. i feel sorry for my non-biking friends. they know relatively little about the city they call home.

not just that, but NYC is not as insular as a lot of people would believe. it's easy to ride across the GWB into jersey, piermont, bear mountain, etc. it's similarly easy to ride out to long island.

there's a lot of exploring to do around here. it's a great place to live.

it's a real neighborhood with character, plenty of shopping and culture and stuff, close to everything, interesting scenery, and the lack of useful transportation (read: no subways that go to manhattan) keep the rents and the crazy development somewhat sedated (for now, at least).

Crown Heights

- relatively quiet, affordable rent

- 10 mins. from Park Slope (just about all you need can be found there)

- close to museum, library, park

- quick ride into manhattan (also near a major transit hub)

don't forget nyc's largest sewage treatment plant. good times. i'm just waiting for coned to put another plant up there. Then i'll buy.

ps- I secretely wish I lived in one of the lofts buildings on White street or that one on Boerum...those are the jam compared to these.

ditto what timmhaan said, do something temporary until you find a neighborhood that you like and fits your budget & lifestyle.

transgas--right in the bushwick inlet.

i did a bunch of work on the EIS for the rezoning and redevelopment in wmsburg/greenpoint. those neighborhoods are quite simply going to be disneyfied and decimated. the architectural concept drawings for waterfront development are horrifying. even if transgas doesn't happen--which it may not, the rest of the development scenario is nightmarish.

you can thank the bloomberg administration--for that and just about anything else that's taken the character out of any nyc 'hood. rudy was god-awful, but bloomy's even worse.

I've ridden fixed with a dog, and it is not very feasible unless you can go slow and the route is flat. I just use a leash, and I tie it to my rear rack. My dog is smart and we trained each other. The problem I anticipate with the springer, which I have not used, is that it can release the dog if something gets in the way. That is touted as a safety feature, but the last thing I want is for my dog to get suddenly released around any traffic.

I also choose routes with good shoulders and little traffic, because having a dog with you doesn't earn any more sympathy from crazy drivers. When you go down hill on a fixed with a dog, you really have to slow down even for a fast dog, because they have speed limitations. Going downhill slow on a fixie is not as scary as going too fast for your comfort down a hill, but it can really suck, especially depending on whether you or running brakes.

When I first tried this, I was living in mountainous country, with steep hills but little traffic. I decided I really prefer a freewheel when taking the dog.

I imagine it would be very difficult in NYC.

I've only been to NYC for a two week span, but the fact that you guys are talking about the city as if it's made up of separate countries hundreds of miles apart is pretty funny.

Those dog in the backpack pictures are too much.

Sometimes it really can feel like a different country depending where you go. Thats the great thing about this city is it's diversity and wide range of different characteristics. thats why I like Brooklyn more. the neighborhoods have more of it's own character.

haha. Sorry Phil. I have a few friends that live there and they hate it. A few friends of mine got a place in the new loft building on off the Johnson L stop. $1800.00 a month for a new, huge place.

Don'tchu be dissin' the neighborhood I grew up in! It's better now than when I lived there and I got the scars to prove it.
