Used Super Mighty vs. New 75's?

So I have the opportunity to buy a set of used Sugino Super Mighty 165mm cranks from a LBS. He quoted me $200. I thought that was high considering I can get a set of new Sugino 75's with a chaninring for that. I don't know what's a better deal. Both NJS and both Japanese to go with my Kuwahara track frame. Do you think those vintage Super Mighty cranks are worth that? Maybe if I can get him to throw in a chainring? I did see a set of these go on eBay for around $260, but they were NOS. Your thoughts please. Thanks.

$200 is high for super mighty's imo. they're great cranks, and stylie as hell, but i wouldn't go over $150 for a set, esp. w/ no chainring.

Thanks dolface, I guess I could have just PMed you. Baxtefer: I'm not sure what the BCD is. I thought he said it was 135? Sounds wrong though.

they'd be 151bcd or 144 bcd, if they're 151 it's harder to find chainrings for them.

So if I go with the 75's, what kind of decent, but not super expensive BB? I think the 75's call for a 109mm, but the Sugino BB is around $75! I can't spend that much.

You can get the sealed Shimano BBs in 108 and 110 (around $30). Unless you're really obsessive about chainline, it'll be fine. I'm running the 108 with the 75s, and it's just fine.

107 or 110
they'll give the same chainline.

Nope. People do say that you can tell the difference that the matched BB makes, but I'm going to labor on in blissful ignorance, because it's really very quiet. A good quality chain, chainring, and cog will make more difference, in my experience, noisewise (my Suntour cog is the quietest thing I've ever run). Marcus at Yojimbo's told me that he runs the same setup (on at least one of his bikes), if you want a testimonial with a bit more meat to it.

Awesome. I have a 19t EAI machined cog and a decent chain so it'll probably be nice.

get the sugino 75 spindle for $30 and buy some used but good condition BB cups for a few bucks and you are golden. you get the perfect spindle match/chainline and save a bunch of money. that's what i did and i haven't had an issue yet.

144 bcd for Super Mighty. get what rocks your boat.

To me almost the same feeling in riding them.

Even without chainring price ok but get it down to 170-185. tax included..lol

A UN73, or a UN53? The UN73 isn't really cheap, but I don't see a lot of them really busted...The actual low grade Shimano stuff does break down, but we're talking x-mart bbs. (I.e., not the UN73, which is what the link is to.)

haha. because that bike is my size and i had my eye on it for a long time. . . i knew about kuwahara bmx, but i'd NEVER seen/heard of a kuwahara track frame before that one. it was originally on ebay, seller from australia, but expensive shipping. then, a guy who posts regularly on BF bought it. he lives in san diego, and posted it on craigslist, as well as on here. so basically, i had the pleasure of drooling over it twice, but still passed it up. if i didn't already have a steel lugged track frame, i would have snatched it up in a heartbeat!

the UN73 is good stuff. the OP lives in california, so inclement weather shouldn't be an issue. besides, its sealed, so even less maintenance is required. i'm running sugino 75's with this bb with no problems. i considered doing what jamey said above, but i preferred a sealed bb. and dura ace 7610 sealed track square taper bb's aren't readily available in the US. . .
