wingnuts?
Has anyone ever seen these wingnuts on a front hub? I found an older bike, a Kabuki, with these holding on the front wheel.
Also, is there any quick release mechanism for front bolt on hubs other than a longer axle and standard quick release? Thanks ~jg http://static.flickr.com/16/94093447_5187dfc1b8.jpg |
Just a guess but maybe it was a homebrew solution?
|
It's an old-school thing.
|
My conversion was using them when I got it. It is a 1955 Wolverhampton Wearwell. They were much fancier then those. Sold them on eBay for like $18
|
Umm.. have you seen the Classic and Vintage forum?
|
tullio campagnolo
|
We need axle knock-offs...
|
you can find em on crappy old french bikes. You can also find em on nice old bikes, but you can easily scavenge the wingnuts without remorse from the crappy ones
|
they are all over e-bay
|
So should I take it that there is no such thing as a quick release for track hubs other than standard quick release on all other hubs? I know Phil has allen bolt hub but wondered what else is out there.
Guess I'll just carry around my 15mm wrench. |

Tullio Campagnolo supposedly invented the quick release as an alternative to wingnuts after he had difficulty removing them during a race in winter conditions. Wingnuts are really pretty nice to use, but not with frozen fingers.
Until the quick release gained acceptance, wingnuts were used on many high-end road bikes. |
wingnuts were on the 60's frejus track bike that i just got, im not sure if they were original or if they were added later for some reason
|
fugly!

Yes, that's what I said.

Apologies. I should not have said supposedly.
Incidentally, according to Campy Only, he was not repairing a flat, he was changing gears. http://www.campyonly.com/history.html Although Sheldon holds that he was fixing the flat. Wonder who's right. |
Everytime I heard or read the story, it was a flat tyre.

Kabuki was a slang term some of us used in high school for, um, girls. People, places and things change and I haven't used the bike or the wingnuts. |
