IRO crankset upgrade
 

I'm not too fond of my IRO cranks. After doing the best to adjust it myself, and having others do the same, the variation in chain tension is far more than i'd like. From what I've gathered in the forums, this is a common problem. I'd like to fix this, but I'm not sure what route I'd like to take.

Has anyone had luck with just replacing the chainring & cog?

I've been looking at other cranksets, in particular the Miche Primato Pista, and the TA Alize Piste. I'm leaning towards the Miche, because of it's good reputation and because I've gathered that the TA can cause chainline headaches. I'd be interested to hear other's experiences with upgrading from an IRO crankset.

i rock the miche primato pista cranks and ****in love them . But you will have BB headaches. The matching miche primato BB is 107 mm spindle. But i used a campy 109mm spindle and it worked great . Perfect chainline. Maybe i lucked out. Butthe cranks are golden...

so what's wrong with the miche bb? it's $35 and from what I hear it's nice. do you rock the miches on a mark v?

No . its on a pista. the miche BB is fine. but i had a little more money to invest for BB. Ive only heard since it is dual adjustable it has a hard time staying adjusted haha. For the money its great. If my current BB fails ill probably try it out. But again the crank arms are solid. I got mine from a fellow BF member for 100 shipped. great deal chainring and all.

that is one more thing. they are 135bcd which pretty much means its miche track rings only or campy road rings. But the miche chainrings are wonderful IMO.

Gebhardt also make track rings in this size - they're supposed to be decent quality

I used to run a miche setup on an italian frame and had it come loose on me on the drive side. Before tightening down the BB cups I noticed that the cups seemed to fit less tightly in the frame than an italian thread shimano set I compared them with. Maybe they were undersized due to crappy quality control but probably I just didn't tighten them enough. In any event the miche setup isn't like a UN73 where you tighten this hell out of the drive side cup and just tighten the non-drive plasitc cup. Tighten the **** out of both miche cups. Maybe even some blue loc-tite on the drive side if you have italian thread.
Good to know that the campy bb works out.. I always resented miche for being silly about standards (107 ISO BB, 14mm track nuts, 135bcd x 1/8" rings, aluminum threads on the spider instead of pressed in female chainring bolts.)

Get some Sugino 75s instead. They are very well made and affordeably priced. They work with Shimano, Phil, and Sugino bbs without any headaches and they take 144 chainrings so you have lots of great choices.

that is a great price. if i go with the 75's i'd go with the sugino bb. does anyone know where to get that at an equally good price?
