Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? My Girlfriend is cooler than your girlfriend...

because she knit me helmet earwarmers!

She found the pattern off of menknit.com and whipped these puppies up for me. I've tolerated NYC winters pretty well thus far (50 degrees today doesn't hurt), but the windchill on my ears gets to me sometimes. These just slide over your helmet straps and are super snug after you clip the straps.
If tonight is anything like last night I'll be trying them out in a few hours.

She's making a second set for herself and is considering selling pairs if they work well. I suggested that she line them with gore windstopper, but I don't know where to buy it as a fabric alone.

i seem to remember having seen a few bolsters of it at moods in midtown. she might give them a call.

I looked at that menknit website a week ago, some pretty cool stuff there. My wife knits as well, but she still hasn't knit me my beanie yet.

my girlfriend would have been the best girlfriend ever if she had taken my hint to purchase those two matching 1960's cinelli's that were up on ebay. they were $9k at first and she said, jokingly, "aw, i would... but if only they were just a touch cheaper." her joke (and my prayers) were answered when the seller lowered the b.i.n. to $3k for the pair. she had no reason to not purchase them now, as she had admitted that she'd get them if they were cheaper. apparently i don't understand sarcasm. but for a minute, when i saw that they were cheaper and i totally figured she'd just buy them now, she was the best girlfriend in the galaxy.

now she is just a cool girlfriend. she doesn't care for bikes one single bit. just like i don't care for her balet.

you guys make me endlessly jealous, with your supportive gals. cheers to you all, now please don't smear it in my face anymore! it hurts.

I forgot to mention the Park TS-3 and Spoke Tension Meter I received for my birthday. Or did I already mention that? Either way, here it is again.

Drac - maybe it is time to check out ballet...

I'm trying. She taught me about history of ballet slippers, and how they went from being handmade things of beauty to impersonal, machine made "objects" and I easily (selfcenteredly) likened it to bicycle frames. I think the best ones were Italian made, too, so that's another connection in my head for us to bond over. Ballet is cool I guess. I like Russian stuff too, and she can help me pronounce all the names in my dear Pushkin, Nabokov and Tolstoi.

you aren't just given someone like this, you have to earn their companionship.

=[

21" top tube + Sram T3 hub = sea wall cruising only.

She's cool and all, but apparently not 'fixed gear' cool.
Whatever that means.

c'mon dude - everyone here gets their fair share of friendly abuse around here. Consider it a mark of kindred-ness. As bass-ackwards as that sounds.

I want a partner who isn't overly impressed by bicycles. Someone who rides to work, rides to the bar, but isn't going to get all bike snob on my ass or repeatedly buy innapropriate bike parts (adjustable angle stems, stupid light wheels, wrong size frames) and ask me to make them work. Few things suck worse than riding with someone who acts hurt if you drop them and gets offended if you take it easy.

I would take a dancer over a messenger any day. rule #12.

point for you, my friend!

we "could", but i don't know if we'd want to. she's a good 14 inches shorter than me, which would make for some discomfort in tights-sharing, i'm sure!
