gippiemme Track Cranks?
I got my 165 specials yesterday and was trying to hand screw in my MKS track pedals...but it screwed in a little and then got hard...I didn't want to force it just in case it actually wasn't the right size. should I just take a wrench pedal to it or do they have a different threading than standard?

If they're the ones that look like fluted record with an interrupted "flute" , they're 9/16 (standard). AKAIK gipiemme's never came in french thread. you probably have a bit of a burr on the threads midway. I'd bring it to a good shop and have em pass a pedal thread tap through to clean it up.

grease the threads too. i know when i've put on pedals (even new pedals into new cranks) sometimes i feel the first few threads go, then it simply "stops" like you described. usually you just have to unscrew, then try screwing again. seems like if the pedal isn't going in the hole on the crank at the exact right angle, those threads just jam up a bit. obviously forcing wont help, just back off and re-attempt. also, yeah, as mentioned above, have threads checked out and cleaned up a bit if they look a bit burry. assuming this is going on that somec you got? pics pics pics.

yeah it is going on the somec. I'll bring it to the shop is greasing it won't help. I'm afraid to post pictures...people might give me crap about not "campy"ing it out or whatever...I love it anyway.

probably obvious enough, but just in case, make sure you put the right pedal in the right crank arm, and the left in the left. Right and left pedals thread in opposite directions.

Do not force you pedals with a wrench if they will not thread in by hand.
Please please please please please do not force them. The threads on the crank are weaker than those on the pedal, and are very easy to strip. You can also try Simple Green + a brush with plastic bristles (like the Park cassette cleaner) on the threads, then grease everything, and try to insert again. You do have to get the angle exactly right, or they won't go in. |
we'd give you crap anyways... so might as well post pics so we can give you crap... it's always better to have pics for us to give you crap about random sh*t.
I don't think anyone was really giving you crap last time, you were just very defensive and read our intentions wrong. Oh yeah wtf are you doing putting those cranks on that bike... the bike will explode. You need some RD cranks and suzue jr wheels to keep it from combustion. |

I think the fact that it aint a conversion and it aint a pista/etc will save you some crap-getting... don't sweat it. somec's are rad, and rare. gipiemme is reputable and campy-like anyways. you're golden. |
