so many people make me ashamed to be vegan straight edge. most of all, people who are self righteous about it. also, people that get tattoos like this one.

this is the fixed gear forum... it's either about that or pictures of lugged steel.

evanyc 02-11-06 02:14 AM

lumen - just out of curiosity, would you mind sharing how old you are with us?

xthugmurderx 02-11-06 08:42 AM

dude. lumen is one of the best dudes i know. he comes across strong, but that kid is very stand-up. i don't know. i'll defend that kid forever. and jon, when are you moving your ass out here?

-jason

spud 02-11-06 09:08 AM

yeah the biggest reason not to let some cyclist(s) drink is that they throw their empty glass bottles where you regularly ride and they break and then you get a flat tire.

that's why i'm curious about his age. he doesn't seem like a bad guy, and i totally understand his reasons, but his oversimplification of things and heavy handedness makes me thing he's probably relatively young.

and wait till you lose someone close to you from a drunk driver and have one of your best friends ***** by an alcoholic. i have my reasons for hatred. if you cant deal with it then piss off.

XVX

i know people that have gotten hit by drunk drivers, i know people that have been ***** by alcoholics, i know people who have OD'd and arent with us anymore(rip), i know people who have betrayed my trust sober, i know people who have crashed their car sober, i know people who have been arrested sober, i know people who have started fights that were sober, ok so, we both know alot of people that have done ****ed up things. thats neat. just cause people induldge it doesnt make them 'dumb.'

oh and you will get one of the most resilant livers out there if you happen to get mine. chances are high that you could get it. i dont plan on living anylonger than 40, anything after that age is a waste to me. seniority and senality dont seem to appealing to me.

my friend got jumped by some SXE kids and got pretty ****ed up. he didnt do anything except light up a cigarette at a show, ****ing nazi ****s. when i get your liver i'm gonna soak it in wild turkey 101. i hope yer joking with the 40 thing, man i cant wait till i'm old. 40 isnt even old, thats like half of our expectancy. btw i am indestructable.

highpants 02-11-06 12:38 PM

i appreciate that the tone on the part of the straightedgers on this thread has mellowed somewhat, and there's an easy pot joke in there somewhere, but i'll leave that alone.

my concern, however, is that lumenredundas says that he has his reasons for hatred, without stating specifically whether his hatred is for alcohol or those who consume it. judging from later posts, i'm thinking it's just for alcohol, but maybe that terminology could confuse/alienate those who you are trying to explain yourself to.

i was straightedge for a long time, and that stemmed from working with the homeless immediately after high school and watching them drink their lives away. i always saw it as a political move, and to this day, i try my best not to buy from "major labels" that i think prey on people. i don't drink sparks, pbr, mad dog, etc. because of it. so i've been able to retain the politics that brought me to straightedge and still drink.

not saying you should do that, per se, but we all have our resaons for what we do. or maybe we don't, and maybe we should. but i'm not sure how taking a stand against a substance after the negative experiences that you shared with us is really an answer. by the way, let me be the first to say that i'm sorry those things happened; i think that people on here became very defensive very fast and brought sarcasm where maybe empathy would have done better.

i think the problem, though, is alcohol abuse, and maybe that's what needs to be addressed. the world is rarely black and white, and maybe the people who did the things you mentioned were as much victims as they were ******bags, and i wonder how straightedge helps them...i think the work with dare and MADD sounds a bit more positive/proactive. i don't know where i'm going with this, because me having a few beers doesn't really address the situation one way or the other, but at the same time, drinking microbrews doesn't seem to be contributing to those societal ills, either.

i mean, hardcore records are made out of fossil fuels, it's just that there isn't an existing youth movement to which i can subscribe that takes a stance against this in the way that the edge stands against booze.

i'm not sure i'm making any sense anymore.

lumenredundas 02-11-06 02:02 PM

im 21 this year if that makes any difference.
like highpants stated i probably didnt expound on my thoughts as well as i should have. yes in part i am against the substance and yes ,more so, in part it is about the abuse. im not saying everyone who drinks becomes a drunk or will feel the ill effects of alcohol. thats just not true at all.
i still donate to MADD when i get the chance, but dare i take no part in only becuase i cant deal with cops anymore(i no longer have any trust in them) so i figured the youth movement in hardcore could use someone to help keep everyone positive about life and still be substance free. like i said earlier i would rather educate than use my fists. it hasnt solved anything like this before and it wont in the future.
to beard, that sucks that your friend was beaten by straightedge kids, i think that the thug mentality of hardcore has gotten out of hand, especially in the XVX community.
this all comes down to personal respocibilty. i guessing for the majority of you out there you know your limits and stay with in them. just keep your head about your situation and be mindfull of others is all i have to say. i could write a huge paper on why i went straightedge and why i stay commited to it. that would clear things up, but im in no mood to do that.

i have pissed alot of you off, oh well, like jason said im not a bad guy. this thread is officailly over. do what you want to do, just be mindful of others.

i'm just checking to see whether it was official because i'm kind of a smartasterisk.

**** straight edge... GET BEEEEENT

griffin_ 02-11-06 04:45 PM

one time, i was riding home from the bar at 2am and i decided it would be a good idea to ride through a pile of leaves. ofcourse it was not a good idea and i endoed landing hard my should. after riding the rest of the way , and falling one more time, i realized my collar bone was broken

TRaffic Jammer 02-13-06 08:53 AM

As someone who is turning forty this year, I can say ....HOLY **** I made it to the other side. I never thought I was gonna see thirty. I spent alot of my twenties in a fog I'll admit, but it was my fog thank-you very much. I'm not nearly the drinker I was and I'm not the owner of a failing liver. I had/have drunk friends, stoned friends, straight edge friends, junkie friends, etc etc. AIDS, CANCER, deceleration trama, rock climbing, scuba diving....take your pick, and there are a few less friends all of a sudden. Our ability as people to listen to each other and not plaster judgments on one another is critical if we ever expect to get wherever it is we are supposed to be going as a people. Yea we do stupid things when we're drunk, but I've had to take straight edge friends to the hospital for some of the stupid **** they've done in the past. Stupidity is not solely the realm of the loaded. it's the human condition.

NOTE that flaming Straight Edge is butt ugly ....you should slap the beast that inked it. What's your excuse? :p

To clear THAT gap .... I'd say 30mph :p

cphfxt 02-13-06 04:57 PM

OH and anyone that drinks and doesn't get drunk is fooling themselves, and more importantly wasting thier time.

God, I miss being young and idealistic. Taking a stand against something. Yeah man!

Look, humans have been drinking alcohol since the dawn of civilization. It's not evil...its not bad...Yeah it can ruin people's lives, but tell me what can't? I've seen people eat themselves to obilvion, that doesn't mean food is bad. Moderation is key...moderation. You don't have to cut things out, just enjoy them in moderation.

jaypee 02-13-06 09:45 PM

No! I drink 'cause I like the taste! I just have to drink a lot to make sure I "taste" everything properly.

"taste"-testers.
a needed part of society.
if not, i'd be homeless, standin' on a freeway off ramp, askin' people in cars for money.

wouldn't ya rather have me on my bike with a lone star in my bag?
