San Francisco Books & Beer Ride
As started in another thread mistakenly, we propose to have a ride that would include any and all San Francisco neighbo(u)rhoods; specifically stopping at hidden-jewel/secret bookshop(ppe)s and bars. So far we have the Richmond tour covered and the Tenderloin tour covered. Of course, I claim no serious knowledge of the Tenderloin and could use some suggestions and perhaps joint efforts could be made for these neighborhoods. We obviously all don't like to drink or purchase books from the same "types" of places.
So, do you live in a neighborhood of San Francisco? Are you also a drinker and reader (or writer)? Please chime in here so we can all share in a wealth of knowledge. We are also proposing possible little historic tours of these neighborhoods, perhaps remaining closer to the literary and alcoholic merits. For instance, did you know that the Owl Tree on Jones doesn't have anything at all on tap? No beer, no sodas. That means all mixed drinks require the separate openings of Cokes, Juices and Tonics! All beers come in a bottle (though you can ask the barkeep for a chilled glass, he's grumpy as can be). Also, on the literary side of things, Robert Frost --- "New Englandt Poet" extraordinaire --- was born on dear old Leavenworth Street (Tenderloin!) Anyhow, chip in, pitch in, get in, step in, ride in, and come along. We like books and we like beer. We ride fixed and that keeps this as a suitable platform for expanding our knowledge (please keep this post where it is). Hello friends. |
id be in for this....though im not claimng i could be a guide.
|
Additional information: we need students as well as teachers! Nothing looks more tough than 50 punks on bikes... All are welcome, so long as you look tough on a bike and have a bend towards literature and liquor, beer and books, vodka and verse, pilsner and poetry, etc etc.

Ah the enthusiasm...
Well I am in regardless. Might have to make this a Saturday in March though. March 11th or so, since the 4th is that race. We could expand these tours to include any thing the tour guide deems relevant to showcase their neighbourhood. Focus will be on some fun riding paired with food and drink as well cultural, historical or obscure tidbits. Anyone who wants to host a tour of their hood post. (I wonder if the mission dwellers will ever find consensus on which burrito place to visit) |
yes, enthusiasm! nothing like a call to arms to see how armless we all are!
oh well. i'd like to keep focus on literature and liquor, but we could also expand our cast to include simple "tidbits" and little insider stuff... mine would probably only encapsulate a block or two, so there might not be much in the way of riding... the riding would probably take place from 'hood to 'hood. plus, if we were to be doing the whole guide thing we'd want a bit of slowness and the ability to talk and be heard (both of which aren't usually translated well while atop a track bike). yes, mid-march sounds good to me. maybe we can drum up more support in the meantime. i'll throw in my two cents as far as mission burritos go: 1-farolitos, 2-cancun, 3-castellitos (which does have a tl location that is comparable to the church/market one). |
might have to post this in the recumbent forum.
|
Ha! Funny on about five different levels.
|
Don't forget south of market, in no particular order:
The Chieftan, Cassidys, Hotel Utah, Annie's Social Club (used to be Cherry Bar), etc... I wouldn't be riding, I don't look tough on a bike. ps, ninjavampires! |
we haven't forgotten south of market; no one has stepped forward to be its representative yet! i am assuming you are doing so?
being tough was just a gag. i am skinnier than my 23c tires, there can't possibly be any "toughness" about that... so, where we stand now: 46x17 = Richmond (outer and inner) plus parts of the Sunset Judah = S.o.M.A. Me = Tenderloin and? and? and? |
I'll wear my leather pants to make up for you sissies.
Hey drac where you at Pop's on Saturday? |
nope. i was in my apartment sleeping!
i haven't been to pops in a long time. the last time i was there my bike was in the middle of a gun fight. locked in front of the liquor store, people in front of it, i held back a moment to hang up a cellphone call (thank goodness) and that extra second of lagtime allowed for me to narrowly miss being at the bike unlocking it while the car drove up and shot at the people that were standing there... it was scary, i won't go back. |
I like books and I like bikes and I live in the Mission.
However, I am the least scary mother****** on the planet. As in, less scary than your grandma, or a baby. |
so, where we stand now:
46x17 = Richmond (outer and inner) plus parts of the Sunset Judah = S.o.M.A. Beppe = The Mission Me = Tenderloin now we have a harder problem to face: 3 of 4 are admittedly "not tough". the 1 of 4 that is admittedly "tough" is only claiming toughness on account of leather pants (which could very well be considered "not too tough" in some 'hoods)... we need to bump the hooligan factor here. when i wear my lock around my waist i've been told by moms and ex girlfriends that i look tough... perhaps the rest of us not-so-toughs could find accessories to at least give the appearance of toughness? or get we could all get new chains for our bikes... (izumi supertoughness) AND: mid march is still most convenient for all parties concerned. |
Oh, forgot: Like 46x17, I can only do this after NAHBS.
|
bumping before i head home from work. if i have to click over to page two or three tomorrow morning to find this i will be disappointed in the whole bicycle-riding, book-reading, beer-drinking population of san francisco. we have 4 people (including myself) shouldn't there be more?
|
I'd totally be down for this but I don't ride a fixie... can I still come out and play? I could co-rep the mision or just be a maker of merriement, whichever!
|
im in as well. but my hood is covered by beppe.
should i educate myself on another part o' town for us to discover? if not i make a great navigator |
katio - i see no reason why not. I'm moving 3 blocks from freewheel on the 1st, but I have yet to discover whats cool in the hood yet. March 11 sounds good.
|

hi all,
still a semi-lurker, but I'd love to join and meet some of you. I'm at Alamo Square / lower haight. I can be creepy and miserable looking in my daily all-black wardrobe. ha ha ha... onetwentyeight - I'm jealous... if I moved any closer to freewheel my woman might leave / destroy / kill me. HL |
