Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I pass by a pure white road bike on my way to work every day. Is that related to cyclist's death?

not neccesarrily a death but i know i've seen a site where they use them to mark where a cyclist has been in an accident, sometimes theres a sign that says "a cyclist was hit here" or something and it's just to alert drivers to be more aware and cautious.

a housemate drove me and LWR out to winco for cheap groceries a few weeks back...on the way, on 43rd and belmont, i think, we passed two white bikes chained to a corner sign....a couple of days later i read of an accident at that intersection, which a bartender had, a year earlier, told me two friends of hers had been killed in.

ghost bikes are sad,

There's a ghostbike (a chopper, actually) locked up outside the Empty Bottle on Western, with info on the victim.

these bikes serve not only as a memento of an incident that cost a cyclist his/her life, but also as a sign of caution to both riders and drivers, as this may be an accident prone area. I like it when there is signage next to the bikes—a white bike by itself won't mean much to passers-by.

on the other hand, just seeing the pictures creeps me out a bit. essentially they are tombstones. I think I would completely flip-out if I ever see a light-post with seven or eight of these things piled high. and I wouldn't be able to take my eyes off. and I would get in an accident. self-fulfilling prophecies.
