Like, no pedaling just stomping up and down on a pedal?

If so...check your frame for cracks (esp in the BB area). I've broken two older Italian frames, and they start with that creek/pinging of death that you swear is a BB dying. Usually right after you ride in the rain....

i thought my bb was going when it was making a creaking/rubbing/odd sound at a particular point in my downstroke, but after i replaced the chain and chainring it disappeared... for what it's worth. those components check out, not too old or worn?

Could be some dirt in the threads of the BB cups. Take it all apart, clean, grease, torque down hard.
