There are pics on sheldon's site of something similar.

Must have been blood everywhere, not to mention the severed finger..

My brother cut half his middle finger off about 12 years ago,

basically: middlefinger + cog x chain = cutoff.

That was nasty. I found the mangled stub on the ground, but, being as mangled as it was, it couldn't be reattached. Now we call him "stubby".

How does somebody even get their hand in there though? Working on the bike or what? I can honestly say I've never come close to getting a finger caught in my chain. *shrug*

turning the cranks while installing a chain and not paing attention to where your fingers are sticking?

i dunno...

digits are surprisingly easy to lop off once they get trapped in something moving.

[see also: never holding the spokes of a car wheel while it's being unloaded from a trailer incase they meet the brake disc/caliper]

My cog ate my finger a few months ago. Here's a picture in mid-heal as the dead nail started to peel off.

My chainring threatened to eat both my left and right pointer fingers on two separate occassions. The tooth hit the nail and I immediately stopped moving the cranks/ejected my finger. The tooth pierced my nails, left a small bruise under the nail, but did nothing further. I knew nails were good for something!

I caught my thumb last year. I was cleaning my chain and watching a bike race on TV and the rag got caught in the cog and pulled my thumb in. Tooth marks from the cog across my thumbnail and then into my thumb. The four punctures didn't look that bad though as they were pretty clean. I lost the nail which has since grown back.

crazyjohnson, I got used it pretty quick. The first day after I got my bandages off though, I had a dizzy moment. I missed a couple of keystrokes and would have sworn that the keyboard was missing some keys until I realized that it was my left index finger in both cases. WhoOooaAa...

TNCLR, eww. I really think that's way grosser.

bostontrevor - I thought it was you. Thanks for putting a link this time instead of the pic(s). I remember reading your original thread after just getting done cleaning my bike while naked (don't ask) and thinking you got off lucky. I decided never EVER to do that again. And I've been a lot more careful about cleaning the chain when it's still on the bike ever since...

I've got a pretty sick wound right now on my pinky. Was cleaning my bike and went to take my pedal off. Put some torque on it and it suddenly slipped and I basically punched my chainring with my pinky finger. Ejected grease into the wound..I've been soaking it in Hydrogen peroxide ever since...I kinda hope it leaves two black scars...

A highschool girlfriend of mine, when she was about two years old, stuck her pinky finger in the chain of an exercise bike that was being ridden by her cousin at the time. She lost her pinky up to the second knuckle. Her parents used to get her to pretend to be picking her nose by sticking that finger up to her nostril when she was little for people's amusement.

Does this mean I can say that I used to have sex with an amputee?

Also, does an exercise bike count as a fixie?
