How to stop really fast while riding brakeless

Crash into the back of a car, like I did today.

P.S. - I'm fine, the bikes fine, even the car is fine.

crushkilldstroy 02-21-06 09:58 AM

i've found that getting hit works pretty well.

and jumping off of the bike is a good way to do it also. i run brakeless and i stop by means of the kevin bacon throw. it's similar to the kevin bacon dismount, but you push the saddle away from you instead of catching it.

edit - and be careful. running into inanimate objects will eventually turn into a bad thing.

mrRed 02-21-06 09:59 AM

damn yosh, glad to hear you're ok.

also known as ghost riding.

getting hit does bring you to a stop pretty quickly. sometimes puts money in your pocket too. ;)

mareesha 02-21-06 10:01 AM

Yep, that works great for rapid deceleration. Peds are softer though.
Glad you're ok.

Grab the nearest sign pole and pull with both hands doing a 540 , 720, or better until velocity is diminished. lol.... If this fails, crash.

wangster 02-21-06 10:07 AM

I personally like buildings... less chances of occupants coming out and yelling at you. Glad to hear your okay... so I guess the brakeless thing's not working too well. And you have that tiny gear...come on dude, you can do better than cars... at least a couple of peds along the way.

TRaffic Jammer 02-21-06 10:11 AM

What if you were to plow into a crowd of peds with arms open wide? Kinda like crowd surfing but on a different vector. Ped BAGS!!!! Coming to a soft cushy stop, and as you spread the love of your group hugs no one ped is lucky enough to recieve the full power of your hug. That way both you and your ride should be fine. :D

better idea. get a whole line of cyclists together and do a riding wall of death. you just need to make sure that at least one of them has a boombox that's blaring sick of it all songs.

hey speaking of stopping fast while brakeless, how does one do that hockey style stop where you end up 180 like in the puma messenger video?

wangster 02-21-06 10:15 AM

very carefully

I was going up that little hill on first ave. aound the 50s. There was a double parked truck, so I was attempting to merge with traffic in the lane to my right (I was on the left side of first). A pickup gave the car in front of me space to merge, so I followed, sprinting after it. It was the sprinting after it that was the problem, as immediately after the car merged he stopped at a red light. I swerved to the side to try to go around and ended up smacking the rear of his car with the side of my body. Since this all occured while going up hill it was all relatively slow.

In any case I had planned on putting my brake back on tonight anyway, and I think it shall remain there until monster track.

That only works for farmer's markets...and giant Buicks. :(

Nothing can stop a man more dead in his tracks than the sight of a recent ex with a baby carriage.

(uncomfortable pause)

$0.00/Gal 02-21-06 10:33 AM

stopping fast + brakeless = oxymoron

gnat 02-21-06 10:56 AM

get your laces wrapped around your pedal/crankarm like i did yesterday. that'll stop you REALLY fast. and also hurt like hell and rip the hell out of your shoes too. my chucks tore straight down the right side. my favorite pair too :(

Stay safe. I am far from a skidding expert, but back pedal very hard and you shall stop, hopefully before you hit the car.

Lean into the skid, and don't get scarred when the bike starts to whip around. This stops you pretty fast, you've been warned.

I'm actually pretty good at both skipping and skidding. I just wasn't expecting the car to stop immediately after merging with the lane. Basically it was just me being stupid and following a car too close at a speed to fast to effectively stop.
