W.w.y.d.

Lets say you could put together a decent fixed wheel (your first) and you had a target cost of $70-85+. Your options are:
Rims
MA3 or CXP 22@ $27
Open Pro @ $46
Hubs
Suzue Pro Max @ $50
Formula @ $26
Suzue Jr @ $20

Question being, would it be more important to get the best rim for your money or the best hub?
Secondly, what would you do?

dolface 02-22-06 08:41 PM

i'd go for the ma3/formula combo.
none of the stuff on your list is bad (except for the jr. hub), so you'd be safe going with any of 'em...

get outta my head

The Suzue Promax is really nice, but Formula are fine.

Also, you gotta think about how your going to get your wheel built up, and also cost for spokes.
just don't get the suzue jr. the Formulas will def. be your best bet.

Alexi 02-22-06 09:33 PM

thats a good price on open pro's

tlupfer 02-22-06 10:00 PM

you might want some spokes too.

baxtefer 02-22-06 10:30 PM

these wholesale prices? that's a cheap OP.
I'd probably do OP/Formula,but you'd be good lacing up any of those, except the Jr.

Or I'd just get these

and tension them myself

Moximitre 02-22-06 10:40 PM

I'm with dolface on the combination. I take it you intend to build it yourself?
coat hangers = free spokes, or try guitar strings, they're strong

junioroverlord 02-22-06 11:48 PM

Remember, with the Pro Max hubs, you get a cool hologram.

gregtheripper 02-22-06 11:52 PM

i'm thinking something similar for my next build. i'm leading towards open pro/promax right now. i guess its really a question of what the difference is between formula and promax.

and you can play music on them.

i agree with dolface, except i think the cxp22's would be fine, too, though my reasons are dumb--i had cxp33's that were pretty good....;)

you can tune spokes, too, but you probably wouldn't have a very true wheel.

but if you have a junk wheel that you salvaged, and you're musically inclined, you should try this. it's fun like woah.

Echoing what other people have said, you must work in a shop. If you're going to ride on the street, Open Pros are a really bad idea. While they're light, round rims, they have a very small profile not ideal for riding on *****ty streets. Get CXP33s if you want a bombproof rim. As far as hubs, I think the Pro Maxes are sealed, so for maximum length between hub overhauls, sealed is the way to go.

this has come up before, but "sealed" isn't the same thing as "cartridge bearing." some loose-ball (cup and cone) bearings are sealed very well by design, and some cartridge bearings suck at keeping out the mud.

i'm glad that someone else made this distinction for me. few things annoy me more than the way that people conflate cartridge and sealed (and loose and unsealed).

Thanks for being as helpful as you guys were. This is my first legit and a good intro to Bike Forums. The prices are wholesale plus 20%, not bad. Im going to be building these myself. Wheelbuild virgin here, any tips?

The one part of wheelbuilding that I eff up every time is the placement of the first spoke on the second side - I always manage to get one hole away from where it should be and have to shift everything over. Otherwise, it's pretty easy if you're patient and follow a guide, Sheldon's for instance.

stress-relieving, unwinding, and spoke prep/nipple lubrication. educate yourself on these topics before building!

Eatadonut 02-23-06 10:43 PM

to anyone commenting on the cheap $46 OPs, you can get em off performance for $45, plus $8.50 shipping I think, so not too much more.
