Anyone use Mallets on their fixie?
Just curious--its finally come to my attention that after 6 years, my first gen Eggbeaters are wore out since my right foot keeps pulling out on uphills, with newer cleats. I have a pair of Mallets I can use, but I'm a bit nervous about a platform pedal on a 170mm crank, though they are fairly low profile and I know many of you still run toe clips and platform pedals. I imagine they can't be all that much worse. My bike also does have a fairly low q-factor going for it as well, though the BB is a little lower than stock after going to a 700c wheel from the original 27". Input welcome.

I guess thats a no? I think I'll just pull the teeth plates off and give it a try.

I was and still am going to buy me some mallets...One of the guys from the Bicycle Kitchen rocks them on his fixie so, yeah.

I've been meaning to post about this... but I'm running 170s on a conversion, and I'm using clips, and I've had a few problems with pedal strikes. I've been thinking about switching over to clipless and I was wondering if that would make for less pedal strikes... Eggbeaters seem to be what everyone uses, so I'll probably go with that. if it doesn't stop the strikes, I'll probably get a new 165mm crank as well.

Screw both of em I'm sticking to double straps and getting some TIME ATAC's when i get back to the states.
Anyways, whatever is f*ct with me is nothing compared to Jam's massivesackattack over there. Feel better man. Here's something to brighten your day. |
Similar to my issue, but at 6 years old, I'm pretty sure my pedals are on borrowed time anyways.

Don't risk it. Signposts suck at 25mph.

I ride original beaters on my CX bike and Candy C's on my fixie. Despite being ungodly ugly, the Candy C's are pretty sweet.

i can't comment on the pedal strike situation, but i like my mallets quite a bit. i also use brakes, so i don't have to depend on them for stopping...
still, i don't have any pulling out issues unless my cleat has been neglected. |
+1 on the negleted cleat. I use mallets with 175mm cranks on a track bike. No problems. I like them a lot better than the eggbeaters, more to stand on. I'm thinking some candys are in my future...

I sometimes use a mallet to hit my quill stem bolt to free the wedge.
