I ran a Surly for two years with no issues. Hell, it's proven itself to be a great, very durable, high-value piece of gear.

I ran a Dura Ace for about 100 miles before my new RDs arrived and I needed a 17t to get the same gearing, which DA doesn't make. I went with the Surly because the place I ordered the cranks from had them in stock. It looks like a fine piece of work to me. I think the main reason people are scared of Surly cogs is that they used to be slightly too narrow to use properly on some hubs, which caused the lockring to bottom out before it mated up against the narrower hub. Once people started seeing a trend in stripped hubs from Surly cogs, they avoided them.

Surly apparently redesigned the cogs sometime recently so they are wide enough to no longer have that problem. I know that I have no problem with the lockring and surly cog on my Formula hub. We'll see how it does down the road, but I think the aversion to Surly cogs does not carry anywhere near as much validity as it used to before the design change.
