I agree. You want to live in a vacuum, move to Hooverville. Writ large, who has heard of that band?

No we've always been at: "anyone who would come to the conclusion that a bicycle with a this bike is a pipebomb sticker on it is actually a bomb is an idiot" If you have a bomb small enough to drop down a bicycle seat tube, you can conceal it anywhere you want to, so WHY oh WHY would you put it in a bike with a this bike is a pipebomb sticker on it?

If we rip apart personal property on such little provocation, what stops me from putting a sticker on YOUR bike just for the fun of watching them rip it apart? What stops the cops from hosing down every record store with one of their albums? Martin makes a Woody Guthrie commemorative guitar that says "This Machine Kills Fascists" on it. I suppose there COULD be a bomb in there it's be way easier to drop a bomb in through the soundhole, than it would be to drop one in a seat tube. Sure would suck to have the cops firehose my new $3000 guitar. glad I didn't buy THAT one.

The kid should print some "This bike is not a pipe bomb" stickers. They are just as suspicious as ones saying that they are.

I think there was an artist (or "artist") in NY who left boxes in the Union Street Station like they were bombs. Might've been about two years ago...?

Anyone remember this?

I have never said that the owner of the bike should be out his personal property, or that I think he should be charged with a crime. What I said is that I can see why they took the threat seriously. Nothing would stop you from putting the sticker on my bike and having it destroyed, just like I could put a suspicious package in your backpack, leave it on a corner and call it into the police to have it blown up. People do malicious things to take advantage of procedures designed to protect others. But that doesnt mean we should just forget about trying to implement them. This guy got his bike cut up. Yeah, that definitely sucks. However, I would rather have his bike cut up and have nothing else happen then to have the 1 in a million chance that there WAS something in the bike and have it blow up and kill someone.

As for your guitar argument, I would say there is quite a difference between a guitar that says 'this machine kills fascists' and is a type of a political statement and a bike that is made out of metal pipes that has 'this is a pipe bomb'.

Like a previous poster said, the stickers were designed to provoke, which they did. If you are going to put something like that on your bike and leave it out in the middle of the open you should be prepared for the reactions of others whether they are favorable or not.

This is seconded and thirded by me. Someone please do this.

And drop a pipebomb down some seat tubes for good measure, but not on all, just some. That way we can keep the cops guessing. They don't even have to be real bombs, use your imagination: reasonable facsimile and whatnot.

If ANY bike could contain a pipebomb, and we agree that most bombers are unlikely to label their bombs, then logically it is more likely that every bike without a bomb sticker on it actually has a bomb. If we should have the cops destroy stuff on a one in a million chance that there is a bomb there we'll run out of stuff fast.

Police have to show probable cause to search personal property. A one in a million chance is improbable. I am not saying police should not respond to threats, but there must be some minimum standard for establishing that something is a threat, and I don't think that bumper sticker is it.

Those people who do not know its a band would think "ha, that is funny, wait... this bike might actually be a pipe bomb because why would anyone put a sticker saying that on an actual bike?!?!!!!!!" and they panic and call the cops.

SO, since there was no one on the bomb squad that knew This Bike is a Pipebomb is a band they ripped it apart. that is understandable.

But don't charge the kid. The cops should be like "well we thought it was a pipebomb, followed procedure and whoops, we f***** up, haha oh well, here is a new bike kid, my bad"

see that way everyone wins, the public is safe from possible exploding bicycles, the bike owner gets a new bike, and the cops are laughed at, which is what cops are for anyway.
This is what I was thinking and it's analgous to when the Police detonate other supposed bombs that turn out to be kids buying walkie-talkies for christmas presents and the like. You don't hear them say, "He was carrying a gift wrapped box with batteries and wires inside and we chose to destroy it. We're going to charge him with a bomb scare."

Your fear doesn't make me a criminal.

people are too f***kin paranoid... they need to chill the f*** out and take a deep breath and think of a happy thought.

When I watch the news and hear of things like this, I'm just wondering when we're gonna look back and think "WOW! why didn't we see that coming?" but of course, this will be when we have no more sense of humor and live in a constant state of lockdown... even more than now.

"And wow! Hey! What's this thing coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding word like... ow... ound... round... ground! That's it! That's a good name -ground!
I wonder if it will be friends with me?" -Douglas Adams

I hear your concerns. I will end my thoughts with this. The sticker was meant to provoke. By telling someone there is a bomb, its likely youre trying to stir the pot. Looks like that was achieved in this case. I dont think that cops should rip apart personal property on 1 in a million odds, but I dont think they should ignore blaring messages either, whether they are meant to be taken literally or not. If someone wants to put the sticker on their bike, thats fine. But I think they should be prepared if the reaction that some people have is not quite what they were expecting. If I put a racist sticker on my bike, I wouldnt be surprised if someone tackled me and kicked my ass. I wouldnt blame anyone else though.

doug adams good, bullwinkle better

several years ago (maybe 2 years after oklahoma city) there was an art student on my campus that rented a ryder truck, parked it in front of an administration building, and in black tape spelled out "Not A Bomb" on the side. Hilarity ensued.

#$%* that. If I lived there, I would print out

"This SUV is a pipe bomb"

stickers and plant them on every hummer and tahoe with a college age kid in it,call the cops on each one, and make damn sure their parents got the bill for city services.
