Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Finger on moving chain is a good way to get a free nail/finger clipping

Someone who posts here actually had that happen to him. He was late for some kind of meeting when he was cleaning his chain with a rag.....the rag got sucked into the cog, his hand went with it...

It's the same dude - Boston Trevor. Those pics come back every couple of months, usually when I'm eating something....

you like you are high as a kite in that photo, but sorry about your finger.
the same thing could very possibly have happened to me the first time
i tried to take off the chain. instead it (luckily) cracked the top of my fingernail in half
and then i stopped it. i had even read all about this very thing and seen
pictures on sheldon browns site.

yah, that almost happened to me. luckily the chain was moving fairly slowly. i just got a really painful, swollen fingertip, and a gross-looking nail.

and yeah, this thread happens every few months.

Bikes: Lots. Mostly steel. Mostly heavy. Mostly geared, and very low, at that.

hey, i just cut the tip of my left thumb off last night. they were able to sew it back on because it was hanging on thanks to a little chunk oh flesh. the doc said that it should stay attached, but it might loose blood, die, and fall off. oh well, i still have a thumb, i'll post some pictures when i take the bandage off and can type with both hands.

p.s.
cleaning your chain can be dangerous, so don't be stupid like me, take your time, and enjoy your fingers.

I can help you any time... I'll even supply the bike.
Seriously, Bostontrevor ensured that I'll never lose my fingertip that way. Every time I'm messing with my drivetrain the image of the chopped end on that counter comes to my mind and I think "No need to hurry. Keep your hand nice and far from the chain."
