Zo Bags buckle question...

Hi,

Just curious if any of y'all know where I could find a metal buckle like the kind used on Zo bags... my ladypal has an ancient timbuk2 bag (it predates the plastic cam buckles...) and she wants to retrofit it with a strap that is easy to adjust on the fly. I checked out the usual buckle suspects (strapworks, seattlefabrics, MEC), but no dice. I don't even know what this particular kind of buckle is called, so it's hard to google it.

The buckle on my freight bag is basically, but not exactly, the same thing:

Thanks.

I think i found it:

email zo from one of his ebay listings?

freebird 03-13-06 11:11 AM

This probably isn't what you want, but my friend took his old Zo down to the shoe repair store and had them install a GM seatbelt (ala Chrome) from the wrecking yard. Works great, and cost all of about 6 bucks.

Haha, this is called "cinch buckle" most common, easy find local anywhere, too bad can no read Post this one, too bad. Haha

You can also find stuff like that at www.strapworks.com - they have a whole metal buckles section. Personally, I prefer plastic.

SamHouston 03-13-06 08:09 PM

Oddly enough there isn't one listed on the strapworks link above. Odd because it's a very common webbing strap buckle, standard stuff if there ever was a standard. If you search "webbing strap buckle" you can probably find a place to buy it locally. It will eat a timbuk2 strap though

FlippingHades 03-13-06 08:27 PM

That is odd. I didn't actually look, I just assumed they'd have it.

Now, if I could just find a source for *these* babies: http://www.natlmold.com/specialty.html#ElastoLok, I would be one happy camper.

The plastic cam buckles are available at REI stores.

I wear my bags on my right shoulder, and am in the process of modding the strap on my Timbuk2 with one of these:

I'm going to cut the strap somewhere in the middle and add the buckle in-line with a D ring laced into the lower end. This will allow the strap to function much like the one on my Baileyworks Pro.

more or less on the subject does anybody have any pics of Zo bags? I've had a hankerin to see one of these mythical beasts. What exactly is it that makes them so extraordinary? Cheers.

they come up on ebay now and then. i dont have a good pic of mine but someone else might post a pic of theirs?

what makes them extraordinary is subject to debate, but those that think that they are extraordinary think this because: 1-they are handmade by one guy, 2-this guy has been handmaking them by himself for 20+ years, 3-he is "legit" in all the ways most people decide legitimacy, 4-punk rock diy, 5-comfy and durable plus if anything fails on them (which rarely happens) he is happy to fix.

You know how it is when spray paint fades but you're not ready to give a shirt up.

I landed / slid on my Zo bag in two serious motorcycle accidents in the mid 90s, ie. freeway crashes going 80+mph. Both the bag and myself escaped with only superficial scuffs. I think the bag was at least 5years old when the first accident happened. It had been used as a full time bicycle / motorcycle messenger bag since it was made. That bag is still being used.

I have lost 3 Zo bags. I still get sad when I think about the red one...

I think I just (finally) found a retail source for them -- http://www.dogbooties.com/webstrapcinch.html
2" "web strap cinch". Oddly enough, dog collar makers are good sources of hardware :)

I want to find some of these.

FlippingHades 05-22-06 05:39 PM

Taco - REI sells them in their stores in packs of two. I think they're $0.80/pack. There's usually a carousel near the hiking or camping gear with buckles and lots of other assorted hardware.
