anyone use crankbros. mallets?
 

So I tried clips 'n' straps once, and I just didn't like it as much as my eggbeaters. I'm just not a clips guy. But now I'm missing the convenience of being able to jump on the bike with whatever shoes and go.

So I'm thinking of gettin some Mallets and run a front brake -- which would allow both clipped riding and jump-on-and-go riding. Anyone have this setup? How are the mallets?

I ran shimano clipless platform pedals on my geared bike for a while with the same idea. I hated it. The pedals were too heavy and felt like overkill when I was riding clipless, and they hurt to ride in regular shoes. With the shimanos, my foot would always slide across the clip and the platform did very little good. Someone should design a clip on platform for clipless pedals.

Mallets are great in the aspect that it is a clipless system and provides a faily large platform to pedal with when you would prefer the saftey of not being clipped-in in those "U fall U die" situations.

I've used tha Mallets with sneakers for a quick trip to the coner store or ride to the play ground with my daughter and it worked quite well. I wouldn't say that the Mallets are something I would use for longer rides without my clipless shoes because the pedal, even with the longer plates installed, do not provide a lot of grip on my sneakers.

I use the CB system on all of my bikes.

I use them, and they really aren't good if your not clipped in. The part where you clip in is always pushing on your foot, and there's nothing else to keep your foot on. I agree with Tequila Joe... Great if you want to clip out for a little bit and have something to stand on, but not made for riding in normal shoes.

I think I'm going to buy some candys to have the platform...

Take a step back and use the candies. There is a small platform there. It is enough to use for short trips. Honestly though, if you ride enough, just get a pair of comfortable clipless shoes to wear around.

i have mallets on my cross bike. i love them. they do exactly what you're looking for very well.

sometimes its nice to wear waterproof shoes on an all-weather bike.

just read some of the other posts in here. maybe the difference in my experience is that when i ride them without my clipless shoes, i use redwing hikers with an agressive tread. they grip the pedals just fine.

they're useless with soft-soled shoes like chuckies / sambas / etc.

foot hurts, then slides off unpredictably. marginally better with my thick-soled "trail running" shoes. I don't use mine anymore.

haven't used the clips yet, but been riding with regular shoes for a few days and love the mallets... i've been using the more aggressive plates. haven't had any trouble with slipping, or my feet hurting... hell of a lot better than riding on candy's... those "platforms" are useless to me. maybe it's just me though? i also haven't gone very far on them, trips less than 2 miles. i could see how (as was mentioned) riding in clips could make them feel like overkill though, we'll see

Mallets sound like a good choice for you. I ride mostly clipped in and here and there I like to just cruise around in flip flops or sneakers and since I take it pretty easy then, I am not too worried about the lesser grip.

One thing I forgot about them - they're kind of annoying to take on and off. There's no 15mm drive, so you can only use a hex wrench from the back.

I like them a lot for fixed gear riding. There isn't enough pedal purchase in street shoes to safely ride fast/far without clipless shoes, but for running down to the LLS with my 42x16 they are fine with street shoes. Skidding and all that is a lot easier with the additional platform as compared with my regular eggbeaters.
