I understand the logic. They are appealing to people who are trying to lose weight. However, I always thought that the whole point of drinking energy drinks as opposed to say...water was specifically to replace carbohydrates that you burn while exercising. More to the point, isn't it true that consuming sugar while or immediately after exercise works to replace glycogen stores that are burned off? (as opposed to turning into fat) I don't know it just seems to me like they are appealing to people who don't seem to know how these things work.

that's dumb; when i'm exercising i want all the calories i can cram into my pie-hole, not less.
(but like delay, i guess i understand who their target market is, i'm just not in that market).

I think it's a swell idea. I don't drink gatorade specifically because of the high sugar content. The arguments they make in their commercials are correct though: when you sweat you loose more than just water. This drink they have here replaces a lot of the sodium and potassium consumed during physical activity. While it is true that you want to replace the calories you burn working out at some point, the sugars in gatorade aren't really that great. I prefer to get mine from less processed sources, like rice, vegies, and fruit.

The logic is some people do not drink enough water. If it tastes better they will. Under 20 miles I skip water. 20-30 just 2 bottles, 30+ miles I put one/third can of diet grapefruit pup in each bottle and carry 1 or 2 more cans of pop. For major rides I bring along several jelly sandwiches.

The point is that you store sugars in your muscles. When you exercise these are what gets used first. After that carbohydrates and finally fat. When you drink energy drink it replenishes the sugar in your muscles. It is not converted to fat. In fact if you don't have simple sugars right after burning calories you will end up lathargic and what not.

i like the FRS energy drinks, Lance drinks them so they should be good enough for me! however for some reason they make me very irritable. and my balls shrink. and i can lift small cars.
they come in energy drink form, concentrate, chews, and syringe.

The title of this thread is more misleading than the marketing it is making fun of. The marketing doesn't refer to it as an "energy" drink. Its marketed as a "sports drink", which doesn't imply that it gives you energy and doesn't really mean anything. Water is a sports drink too. Its obviously being marketed to people who don't really exercise. People who drink gatorade don't exercise either. Its basically diet gatorade.
However I can see where powerade might be useful on a long ride if you wanted to prevent dehydration, but you would also need to take in calories from some other source. But its certainly not an all-in-one fuel like heed or perpeteum.

raise your hand if you think gatorade is generally drank as a sports drink? at many bodegas it's one of the better things that kids will call "juice" the worst probably being huggies(i don't know what they're called elsewhere but that's what we called them in philly when i was a kid) less sugar and fewer calories in most kids diets would be a great thing
