Track bike help
Hi, my new project is off and running. I got the wheels set for my track bike figured out. I got a nice
27" front and either a quick release or solid axle rear wheel. The problem is now in the cog. I found this cog on Ebay and was wondering if it could work with my rear hub. Both of the wheels quick release and solid are almost identical.I am gonna (with help) rework either rear wheel...new spokes, etc..not the issue. Im pretty sure it can work but I wanted to make sure. Below I linked the ebay ad and a pic of the quick release wheel. Thanks so much http://img387.imageshack.us/my.php?i...scf01457cn.jpg http://cgi.ebay.com/Track-Cog-18T-Ne...72QQcategoryZ4... |
search for bumbike or suicide hub and then you'll find lots of answers....long story short the cog will fit but I wouldn't do it
|
yeah the whole cog unsafe and other stuff..yeah my mechanic friend has given me the whole deal. thanks
|
oh yeah I will use the solid axle definitely..LOL
|
why not just pay like $80 for a new rear wheel? A lot safer...
|
Quick release: not a good idea.
|
seriously... just go by broadway bike or cambridge bike, get yourself a rear wheel and save yourself the trouble and save yourself. it's called a suicide hub for a reason.
|
did anybody click the link to the cog or the wheel? but mostly the cog

HAHA. I just did. Ridiculous. |
The auctioneer also needs to take some high school physics again apparently.
"the dark spots you see in the photo are light bouncing off the black surface. " |
Someone needs to explain the difference between 'black anodized' and 'very oxidized' to the seller.
|
Condition: New my ass.
Splurge on the extra $5 and get yourself a Dura-Ace. |
That **** is thoroughly rusty, isn't it? Worth about $1. The wheel... even over here, where people don't throw away good stuff that much, you can get better ones from dumpsters.
However, I say go for it if you're broke and you want a working fix (make sure that rear wheel is gonna hold up...) Keep in mind that it is not bombproof and keep the brakes on. Look up rotafixa and tighten the cog down as hard as you can. Possibly throw in some threadlocking stuff and a BB lockring. Don't buy that rusty old cog, get whatever else you can find cheap. Oh, and Sheldon Brown uses quick release. You need a decent QR and tighten it down like crazy but he says it works just fine. |
Just to clear this up...Im not using the quick release wheel..Im going with the solid axle one I got. The seller on Ebay is ignorant of the items he has I think. I really dont have the $100+ to blow on a new rear wheel from a my local lbs.
some of these get pricey http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/wheels1.html |
I guess just invest the money you save from the rear wheel on medical insurance and you'll be okay.
|
that rear wheel and cog will go beautifully together.
they both look like DEATH! seriously, get a new wheel and cog. |

It'd make a good ninja star to throw. |
on the auction he says that it's an 18 tooth cog and then later he says that it's a 17 tooth cog?

Is this auction a joke? It's patently obvious that that cog is anything but new and, in fact, rusted to a ridiculous extreme. Seller's Reply: Hi, Thanks for your input. My photo is not very good, but the cog is black anodized, and the surface is not a consistent colour. It is a new cog, just shipped about a month ago from a major U.S. distributor. All the other cogs i got at the same time were silver, but this the largest available from this source, is black. Perhaps you can see the threads on the inside show no signs of use. Nor do the teeth of the cogs. Please review my feedback if you doubt my integrity. Of course you are under no obligations to bid. But thanks for bringing to my attention exactly how poor the photo is when show on eBay. I will try to take another photo tomorrow. Perhaps if i use a different background i can get a better photo. Do you have any suggestions in that regard? If you are interested in this 18 T cog please let me know & i will try to get you a better photo. Again Thanks for your input. |
that is the funniest response from any ebayer I have ever seen. I doesn't address the issue. that no bid for me

So I decided to head over to me LBS and see what they have to offer. I was in luck. They had a track wheel with Suzue Hub for only 84.99. It came with a nice cog too. So basically this debate is over. Thanks

Let a whole new debate begin... |
i met a guy named JJ in austin this weekend that had a regular hub/wheel that he removed the cassette and placed a cog on it without a nut or lock tight or anything. he said that this european guys taught him how to tighten the lockring so rediculously tight that a human couldnt get it off. something about looping it over the bottom bracket. anyways he has been riding brakeless for almost two years and it has never slipped once. i thought it was pretty tyte.
