Get that scowl off your face!

Lately (in chicago at least) all the people riding track bikes/conversions all have an angry look on their face. Usually accompanied by a hat pulled down low on their forehead. First of all - it's Spring! (officially, even) Isn't this a time to be happy that within 2-3 weeks the sun will show it's face more often and you start wearing less layers?? Second of all - You shouldn't ride with a hat covering your eyes. You're already riding with no brakes..now you wanna limit your field of vision? Safety first!

all you have to do is smile and wave, it will instantly cheer someone up. i dont care who it is, I always wave when passing a cyclist.

genericbikedude 03-21-06 10:59 AM

when cyclists wave at me, I cross my eyes and say "eeeeeeeee"

Don't worry about it. It is an SF thing.

They're pissed that there hasn't been another poutine night.

You know, I returned my deep fryer. The last time I tried to use it the oil BOILED OVER. It was everywhere.

schloe mo 03-21-06 11:33 AM

It's not too cold. I'm going to put my clipless pedals back on RIGHT NOW just to make sure it does snow again :p

pitboss 03-21-06 11:39 AM

Yo Sean
Maybe you need to toe your brakes! All that squeekin' hurts the ears...
;)
You still should come out to the velo for a few laps, with your track bike.

$0.00/Gal 03-21-06 11:47 AM

Actually, my brakes are louder than most because of the deep rims. It's like the sound echoes through them.

I will definitely be out for some laps with you guys.

No_Minkah 03-21-06 11:47 AM

It's just that it's been cold to too long now. We all got a taste of spring last week, and now it's like ****ing 25 degrees out again. I'm sick of it. That's why I sport a scowl-cap.

As long as you don't mind cutting your lifespan in half!

Sigh.

In the process of getting lost at Monstertrack, I came across that Pommes Frites place that someone was talking about on here and very nearly ran in for some poutine. There is no good reason why I didn't.

humancongereel 03-21-06 12:03 PM

oh, but what a yummy life it would be, short or not!

$0.00/Gal 03-21-06 12:11 PM

Pommes Frites horseradish mayo is to die for

skelly 03-21-06 12:17 PM

sometimes I don't realize I'm scowling until someone says hi and I realize how many face muscles moved to contort my face into a smile to say hi back. but nothing can take the grin off my face during the first warm week of the year.

on the deep fryer tip... my heart would stop within a month of buying one.

No_Minkah 03-21-06 12:27 PM

On the way home from the velo on Saturday I stopped for some sopas. I was locking up and a cute girl (kind of a hippy) on a fixie rode by and I waved. She waved back and like totally checked me out, or maybe just my bike. I like to think we made each others' days. I should've chased her down but my legs were jelly.

When I went inside to the restaurant, the host came up to me and said "What do you ride?" He must've made me because of my tights and manpris. Go figure. I pointed out my bike and he proceeded to tell me all about the time he spent working at Cycle Smithy, about how he'd trade margaritas and tacos for bike parts. Then he brought me my sopas and we chatted for awhile about biking and running. When I left I told him I'd say hi to this guy I know who he used to work with, and he said "Tell him the Mexican said hi".

In summary, more days like that, and less days like this.

schloe mo 03-21-06 01:22 PM

ok i just conducted a little test. i rode from my studio to chavas tacos without scowling, even with a little grin on. know what i found out? it's hard!

riding without brakes in traffic takes concentration, and now thanks to 00.0000 i am aware of my concentration face... something like this -> :( i should listen to my wife's kungfu instructor... relax the
face, show no frustration to your oponent.

that being said, i'm not a big waver. i actually prefer the cowboy nod. especially when you're riding into a headwind with little bits of frozen rain slapping your eyelashes. if someone rides by and we exchange nods it's as if to say "grrrr..keep on keepin on".

$0.00/Gal 03-21-06 01:27 PM

We should all just ride hybrids with panniers and wave like the Queen Mum

onetwentyeight 03-21-06 01:30 PM

On sunday I was getting breakfast and an older guy came up to me and started asking questions about my bike... Turned out he used to race track in the 60s and 70s, and was getting ready to tour across the US. Made my morning. Last night I rode around SF a bit with my roomate and sikanna, managed to dodge the rain somehow but man that was fun, slippery and light traffic. I was grinning like an idiot, though that had a little bit to do with the beer as well...

monkey 03-21-06 01:34 PM

+1 cowboy nod
+1 Chavas Tacos!
