FSA Vigorelli won't fit steamroller
 

FYI- I started this thread a while back and have since gotten the FSA Vigorelli track crankset/ Isis BB and was excited and ready to assemble with my Steamroller freshly back from powder coating today and the chainstays are too wide for the crank arm. I'm a little bitter...

yeah- i believe it was "boston baked bean" at one time but it's been with me for about six years now and flat black.

Like I mentioned in your orginal thread several months ago, the newer Steamrollers don't have this problem with track cranks.

yeah i guess i didn't realize how much of a difference in width there was- and i had heard from other people that it should fit fine w/ the older frames. i knew i was taking a chance on it- i didn't realize i would be so pissed about it if it didn't work out. this sucks!

breathe, grasshopper... this doesnt suck, this is where the fun begins.

I installed a slightly longer BB for my track cranks to fit but off course at the expense of your chainline being off by a few mm's...
Is your FSA square taper?

My Miche track (46T) barely fits on my NEW steamroller. I think I have like 6mm. I guess that's the problem with the FFF stays. Not that it's a problem.

6mm is actually quite a bit of clearance.

the FSAs are ISIS so you're a bit fuxored when it comes to finding a longer BB. You could go with a 113mm and move your chainline out by 2.5mm. If that fits.

you could dent your chainstay for a bit more clearance.

I have a fetish position frame (which has 130mm rear spacing). I have 10mm worth of spacers on my iro hubs and to get the chainline perfect I had to slide the fsa bottom bracket so far over that it feels like my left buttcheek is the only one touching the seat hahahaha. I have about a mm between crank arm and chainstay. It sucks, I'm looking for another frame now.

that sounds very wrong.
your rear spacing has nothing to do with chainline.

thats what I thought too, and why I originally wasn't concerned about using the 120mm wheelset with 5mm of spacers on either side, but once I put the wheels on their, and had the bottom bracket adjusted by my LBS to get perfect chainline, thats how it ended up. Only thing I could think of is that my chainstays are bent. I'm going to read some of sheldon's articles on chainline and measure were it should be on my bike, instead of putting the wheels on and then adjusting the chainring to get it perfect.

its works fine that way my wheels were 120 spacing with 5mm on each side.

how close are your chainring and right crankarm to the chainstay? Maybe my frame got bent in the shipping or something. I'll post pictures of the way mine is tomorrow.

I have the FSA cranks with a 49 on my new steamroller and it fits just fine

From what I've heard on here and in the shop the Vigorelli develops play between the arms and the spider if used on street. Any of you have that problem?

what crank + BB setup are you using?


the vigorelli spider loosening thing was a model year problem. 2004 I think. the new ones have apparently been "fixed". ( the facotry fix for the defective models was...JB weld)

im using sugino rd's with a 103mm fsa bottom bracket on my 06 steamroller with a 46 tooth chainring. there is only 1mm of space between the chainstay and the chainring. i guess its from a mix of wide chainstays (FFF) and a narrow bottom bracket

GEt sqaured tapper cranks... But i have to recognize this, the vigorellis look super cool hehehe :)

ooooohhhhh, i object. the FSA chainrings look goooooooood, but that dinnerplate that you bolt it to is the fugliest thing i've ever seen on a bike.

I've heard dozens of horror stories about just about every piece of carbon you can bolt onto your bike, but have never had any carbon part fail, and do not personally know anyone who has ever had anything but great experience with carbon.... theres definitely some carbo-phobia going on from the steel fanatics/jealous people.

I have been running the vigorellis for a year and I love them. I also have a carbon fork, seatpost and stem. So I'm not making anything up.

it's not a problem with the carbon. it's a problem with the lockring that holds the "spider" on.

I bet if FSA come back to squared tapped crancks and BBs, they will end getting a bigger shared of the market. But since virtually they created ISIS and the other junk, they are trapped now in their own mistakes, sad...
