Nagasawa vs. Vanilla
When the time is right, which one should I buy first? Discuss.

vanilla
depends whether you want a track machine or a piece of art. not to say that a nagasawa doesn't have a certain level of art to it, or that a vanilla can't be taken to the track, but nagasawas are made for track and vanillas are made to be gorgeous.
i personally would go vanilla, but i don't ever hit a velodrome |
naga****insawa

Nagasawa. No contest.

De gustibus non disputandem est...
|
Nagasawa
I'll also +1 the "downpayment on a house" thing though |
i don't know what kind of house you could buy for $2000-3000 down. that would barely be closing costs.
|
I recall hearing about people dropping up to 9 G's on a vanilla (complete, of course). That would get you a nice 2br cape in my area. :)
Of course, the vanilla will go faster than a house. |

While I like both bikes the level of ARTISTIC craftmanship in the Vanilla is higher. Not to knock traditional lugged frames....and the Naga is a good example...but the extra touches that Sacha puts into his bikes make them artistically more demanding than a plain old lugged frame....even one as nice as the Naga.
|
for me, i'd go vanilla. it's no contest.
i think it comes down to style. they are both great builders and i'm sure you'll be happy with either one, but i personally like Sacha's style at vanilla more. i also think he is incredibly innovative and creative. obviously that is just my style preference, so people may disagree with that point. but there is no question in my mind that you can't beat sacha's attention to detail. the detail he puts into his bikes are brilliant. both are rad bikes, obviously, but with a vanilla you can get it made EXACTLY how you want. plus, you'll probably save a couple hundred bucks with a vanilla. a nagasawa frame is going to cost $2300-$2500. A vanilla is $1700. i've ridden both and now I own a vanilla. i wouldn't trade it for a nagasawa if you paid me. |
Hmmmm, think I'll vote for Vanilla on this one.
|
In terms of aesthetics saying Vanilla is more artistic than a Nagasawa is like saying Art Nouveau is more artistic than minimalism or modernism.
Both artistic, ones just a little more flowery and decorative. Besides, we're just talking about high end craftsmanship here, not art in the traditional sense. FWIW I think both manufacturers are pretty awesome. |
This is so bougie.

just curious.. does anyone actually race a vanilla? or ridden one on the track? this isnt a snarky comment.. just a question..

tough decision
Tough call, they are both very pretty. Though with the Vanilla you get to support a younger guy with a smaller company in a new market. Additionally you get to create a custom bike instead of buying what they put up for sale. But they are apples and oranges, figure out what kind of bike you want first.
Tough one though, better sleep on it and then wake to a breakfast of beluga caviar, bald eagle eggs and chateu rothschild '58. That should help. Seriously though, Why not support a newer framebuilder, check the listings from the handbuilders convention and find someone near you? |
the answer, of course, is BOTH
duh |
I was wondering the same thing. I know that he makes some team bikes, but I haven't heard all that much about how the Vanilla bicycles ride. The top tier builders are all about how they ride - Sachs, Nagasawa, Eisentrout, Della Santa. All these guys fall into the minimalism camp and anyone who has ever been one one raves first and foremost on how they ride. I haven't heard al that much about anyone saying that Vanilla's ride exceptionally well. Though I would imagine they would, they seem (to me) to be about form first.
