Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

How aggressively do you ride?

I don't really think of lane splitting as riding aggressively. If fact I think it can be safer. When I first started as a messenger I stuck to the sides a lot, and every time I have been seriously hurt it was because I was doored by a parked car or a car with no signal quickly changing directions to turn a corner. When I ride in the middle, cars do occasionally try to switch into my lane, but that usually means my lane is open and I have enough room to move out of the way. And if you ride between two cars you know that one car is not going to cross lanes if there isn't room. I know traffic is different in New York, and I am not saying someone should ride in the middle if they are not comfortable there, but I ride fast all day every day and it has been a long time since I have been hurt in an accident.

It probably would have been bad to point out that if you're passing him, he's the "slower traffic."

Aggressive. But not nearly as aggressive as how I drive a car.
