I rode to work in this garbage evil rain we're having here in SF, and was wondering if anyone had recommendations for some rain gear, because I refuse to take Muni. I'm curious to both the low end and the high end and whatever people have experience with.

Bonus points if anyone knows where to find the rapha softshell jackets for under 200 dollars.

To answer your question, Louis Garneau makes a nice vented waterproof jacket around $20.

The Rapha softshell jacket is on sale/reduced on their site now, for $175 or so (100 quid). That's under 200.

i swear by the burley raingear. pricey, but made by cooperative hippies in the pacific northwest, and totally bombproof.

i think at this point, i would take anything else...even snow cause this monsoon weather is ****in killing me.

i <3 my columbia jacket. never been drier no matter how heavy the downpour. and i think it was only 130 bucks or something similar.

seriously...i wear swim trunks, tshirt (maybe a jacket, depeneding on cold) and some old bike shoes...if you cant beat it join it. Of course i change when i get to work.

leg warmers and Dickies. They dry off quickly. If you are commuting, just bag some dry pants.

Low end? I got your low end booties right here:

Step into a Safeway bag and cinch them down with a couple of turns of electrician's tape. Or use duct tape for that high tech silver look.

They're not perfect, but your feet stay relatively dry and hey, it didn't cost anything.

I use a Marmot jacket and REI pants. Rode the stairmaster here in chciago in the rain and stayed completely dry that night!

It's not my feet, its my pants and my back that are causing me problems. I remembered extra pants a bout half way to work :(

I'm not always the quickest thinker in the morning, I was hoping to sneak to work in a little lull in the rain, but I failed.

the whole rain gear thing is very painful. You either get wet from sweating and no ventilation or you get wet because gore-tex is not water proof. (yes the membrane goes both ways). I ride with a g-tex jacket and rubber pants (hardware store cheapes) I put some plastic bags and elastics over my shoes and stay reasoneable dry on my 6 mile commute. Of course you can't ride fast couse you will get hot and anythign longer than 6 miles will get me damp regardless. The gore-tex jacket can only handle about 30 min of rain and then it starts seeping through.

The one thing I am going to buy next is a rain cape and spats. Oldschool stuff but since these are open in the bottom it will get you all the ventilation and since I ride with fenders in the rain it is no issue. Carradice makes some nice ones but they are pricey as hell.

When it's really pouring I wear a pair of unlined ski pants and shell from REI. Not too expensive, but not super low end either.

i have a patagonia rain coat that cost 150 dollars. it was the single greatest purchase i have ever made. its helping a lot in this god awful weather right now.

I just want it for my commute, so worrying about overheating isn't a big deal, I'm only going about 3 miles each way.

patagonia makes wonderful jackets. as does marmot. they keep you dry from the outside but also from the inside too, i hardly ever sweat in mines. i have extras if you want to try. i think bringing spare pants is the best bet. do you have nice leggings for under them? silk longjohns, or just plain thermal underwears from rei do the trick. nice and toasty.

dont forget spare socks too!

I *****ed out today.. I just finished this long drawn-out build on my new road bike, and F me if I'm about to baptise it in road scuzz on its first week as a functional unit. I'm going to slap my fenders on the 'guchi and roll with that for the next couple of weeks.

gill (sailing gear) water proof jacket, and some cheapo nashbar pants. i think the brand is red crest of ridgeburn. whatever it was, they set me back a whole 20 bucks and breathe as well as a garbage bag.
