Last week during Salone de Mobile in Milan, Bleijh Concepts and Design showed the Sandwich Bike at the Tutto Bene Show. Currently in prototype stage, the bike frame is made of two wooden plates, and four identical 'smart cylinders'. It ships flat and can be assembled at home with a single tool. The absence of welding joints makes the frame very easy to produce, and the materials can vary according to the clients’ demand. This way the bike can be kept simple and reasonably inexpensive.

The Sandwich Bike was a big hit - so much so that someone broke into the exhibit and stole the prototype. Rather than dole out justice on the thief, your best course of action is to order one of the bikes yourself.



yeah its ss/fg related! look at the drive train. also...inspiring idea i can make that easily....but i would use metal/aluminum plates and not wood.

Kinda reminds me of those little german wooden bikes yuppies buy for their kids

My god, if someone ever brings one of those things into the shop I'm going to snap it over my knee and fling it out the back door.

I think the german wooden bike is far superior to what we have kids ride here in the states. When I've been in germany, every small child appears to have one of those at the age when kids here have a tiny bike with training wheels... instead of teaching kids to start riding by sitting on the saddle with their feet on the ground and pushing off to start, they teach the kids balance before they learn how to pedal. Therefore most german (and european) adults actually know how to ride a bicycle... as opposed to most adults here that have the seat way too low because they never learned how to balance on a bike without training wheels...

regular bikes ship flat too, and only needing one tool is boooooooring!

And just take the damn pedals off your kid's bike when you're teaching him/her to ride. Sheesh.

I think they're great. Cheap bicycles empower people who can't otherwise afford
a car, the bus, shoes to walk in, etc.. But then again you can purchases a used
bike for less than this thing likely costs... i tend to defeat my own arguments
in the sentence that follows, and tend to conclude the ridiculousness of the
post by the 3rd. maybe I should just stop..

I see this bike as really cool.
Not because of the bike itself but because it gets me thinking outside the normal bike box in my head.
It has more weird and innovative ideas than just the material.
Look at the front forks, handlebar and steerer, and think about it.

Comeon, I mean really, we're a group of bikers that are riding bikes designed for velodromes on the street without brakes! Who are we to say that goofey ideas shouldn't be at least considered?

I'd rather see 1000 concept bicycles than 1 concept car.

IMHO, the main problem is it doesn't look like you can raise or lower the seatpost.

Don't leave it out in the rain. Or near a termite mound. But, in a pinch, you and a friend can combine bikes into a raft.
