Looking at completed Ebay listings, we can probably get a school bus for $2,000-3,000.
So, we're looking at $50-75 or so per person, if we get 40 people to commit.
Then gas and what not.

For everyone's amusement, here's the word on why a chartered bus costs so much. It makes sense, but not to this extent.
And they'll be time enough for all this **** later, but things to think about in addition to CDL and fuel:
-Someone would have to register the bus, which'd be a pain in the ass and a considerable amount of $$, at least in Illinois;
-I'm sure you have to have some kind of passenger injury insurance;
-The chances of an eBay'd bus being ready to go cross-country right out of the gate are pretty slim, so time/$$$ for repairs would have to be taken into consideration;
-Come September, one of us would, uh, own a bus.
All that said, riding across the country in a bus would be ****ing dope, so I'm still really into it. That $290 joint that hyper found, we should keep in mind, is all I'm saying.
Hello Again S.,
I would like to explain why the cost is so great for your request.
Deparing From: Schiller Park, IL
Departure Date: Thursday, August 03, 2006
Est Pickup Time: 12:00 PM
Pickup Address: Schiller Park, Illinois
Destination: San Francisco, CA
Depart Destination Date: Sunday, August 06, 2006
Est Destination Departure Time: 12:00 PM
Round Trip: Yes
Preferred Route: No preferred route requested.
Overnight Stop Required: No
The distance from Chicago to San Francisco is 2,125 miles 1 way. A distance of that nature would take a minimum of 30 - 35 hours of driving. A driver can only drive 10 hours legally in a day & then they must rest for a minimum of 8 hours off the bus. So the Operator has to do a relay driver system on the route. Which basically means they have to spot fresh drivers to switch out every 10 hours. This adds to the cost, because hotel rooms & transportation has to be arranged for those drivers. Please let me know if you have any other questions or would like me to delete your request. Have a great weekend!

when we're through with the bus, we could re-sell it, could we not? to recoup some of the expense?
still I would favor a $100 commitment, so as to cover repairs, gas, beer fund, etc.

Is that $290 round trip, all driver wages, gas included?? Because that is actually pretty reasonable, chicago to oakland on southwest and back is $200, plus ~$200 bike fee.

I'd assume it was round trip.
Not positive though.

Say the bus costs $75 a person. ($3000, 40 people)
If everyone throws in $100 that extra $25 per person would give us $1000 for repairs and gas.

Hire some bus drivers that used to work on Lineas Cristobol Colon. They work in pairs and while one is driving the other is sleeping UNDERNEATH THE BUS!

Here's a place in New Hampshire that sells buses starting at $4000.
https://www.busandbodies.com/subpage/...6&option=price
It makes sense to pick up the east coast folks for the trip.

Keep in mind that if you buy a bus, you still need someone with a Class B license to drive it. They also need to get a pasenger endorsement to transport more than 11 people. The cost is not that great (in CA), but it's a fair bit of work. You need to get a permit (written test), a physical, then find someone to actually give you the road test (the DMV won't do it).
I could help you guys out (jroverlord and I have class B's. Is his expiring this year?) but driving to chicago then back to california seems like a big time commitment.

This will be a pipe dream, unless you all (those of you who want to rock the bus) make yer minds up.
First, vote on which method will be less costly/more preferable. Personally, I'd go with the awesomely brutally radical idea of just buying a bus and going on a road trip. If you don't like that idea, you're too old, and you need to stop being so ****ing practical.
Second, you need to figure out who's going, what they're willing to pay, and how to get it from them. This step requires trust in your BF comrades.
Third, buy the bus/rent the bus and figure out the logistics.
There's more, but I'm too drunk to figure out what else there is.
Maybe I'll meet some of you, and that would be all right.

vomity- nobody needs a CA license of any sort. we can get 'em where we're coming from.
also, we could save some good $ on gas and all that if we got a school bus instead of one of those coach behemoths.
also, we'd need two licensed drivers, at least, to facilitate non-stop driving...

Yeah, the logisitics are staggering but not impossible.
BUT, the first step in all of this is the SF kids picking dates.
Nothing can be figured out until that is decided.
So get on it.

Also, in a reply that is not at all facetious, if you pull off the f***ing amazing bus trip, I will personally guarantee that you will have a place to park it.
That place may be in a yard in Oakland, but still....
