random questions

A few questions related to upcoming upgrades...

1)Has anyone ever put a brake on rims with unmachined braking surfaces? Rubber on powdercoat is not as affective as rubber on aluminium.. but if you have a brake thats only used as an E-brake, how bad can it be?

2) Do DA BB's (7700) come in different lengths? If so, with DA hubs and cranks, what length spindle would I need?

3) 240lbs on high flange hubs with deep V's, 32H, double butted spokes... Are they gonna SPLODE?

Also, I posted about this in another thread, but where can I find a mutant quill stem and nitto 021's or 019's in 40 cm or less widths?

trons 04-20-06 11:57 PM

it will stop your bike and screw up your finish. but i suppose that is better than wrecking your ****.

Rikardi151 04-20-06 11:59 PM

Well, It shouldnt look any worse that a machined rim that has been used for a while.

trons 04-21-06 12:08 AM

sure, but then why not just get machined rims if you're going to have a brake?

it would.

mutant quill is at xxcycles.com. or xxcycle.com. i can't remember if it's plural. i got a 140mm from there. silver. ****ing sweeeeet. dunno about the other ****.

NM are in stock now, I would ahve to wait a month for machined in the color I want. Plus, theyre $20 cheaper!!! (and my rear rim would be unaffected, plus the front should look nice for a few months)

koyman 04-21-06 12:19 AM

i've got a friend who just got NM deep vees, and literally the first day he had them (he ran a front e-brake) he grabbed the lever without thinking. black streaks. could've been worse. If you're going to get them and want to keep running a front ebrake and don't want your front rim to look like **** in a week, find a creative spot for the brake lever or be real good at not grabbing it. it'll look like someone whiped their ass with your rim, and you don't want that.

And you can find the nitto bullhorns, along with some other fun options at http://www.thebikebiz.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=121

i just orders 40cm 021's from thebikebiz.com (38s are out of stock till mid may). Shants posted a link for 34$ 42cms if you were willing to compromise... cant wait... also, mutant quill stem? excuse my ignorance but what is that (a brand?)?

queerpunk 04-21-06 08:46 AM

business cycles is a great resource for this spindle business.

for splined crank/BB, DA road and track are same length.

for square taper, 109mm.

You could always get a drum brake for the front...

Rikardi151 04-21-06 11:24 AM

a drum brake would actually be an awesome idea, but Ive already got the hubs in my possession. I think Ill just wait on the rims for unmachined. Also, Im assuming the bar widths are measures c-c? I like the 019's better, with their further reach, so Ill just get the 40 cm's.

max-a-mill 04-21-06 12:20 PM

how bout some ceramic rim pads??? no idea if they'd be any better but maybe worth lookin into...

thrilhou 04-21-06 12:42 PM

why not have the rear NM and the front machined?
