Another Build: The Coast with the Most
 

Mrs. Locust wanted a bike that she could ride on the streets with me, she had been using my french cyclocross ride but i wanted to make something more her style. so i set out to make her something personal taking into account how she likes to ride and her likes and dislikes. this is what i came up with.

i started with an old 51cm Schwinn world sport, heavy but bombproof. i first removed the old stamped dropouts and the brake bridge since i would need to re-space.

i then cutout the dropouts

and placed them in the frame for a dry fit

after some bending to make sure the dropouts were parallel i broke out the torch and brazed em in. (i am getting much better at this part and i need allot less cleanup now)

the top is a bit heavy on brass but the bottom is looking good

after some rough cleanup i start to think about what else i want to do, i decide to add a little decorative touch since i am not really digging the inside radius of the dropout

after i finished fabricating a brake bridge and re-spacing to 110mm it was time to strip the frame and ready it for powdercoat.

after a few hours time and some wire wheel work its all set for PC

at the last moment i decide to have Andy at Grafton Powdercoating Services do a few other parts with the frame

after that i gather the rest of my parts (thanks to Ben's cycles and the guys at the north shore wheel and sprocket) it is time to start assembly.

the front wheel was a ***** but everything eventually went together without too much problem.

Really nice job on that build. I've got a soft spot in my heart for coaster brakes and bikes like this just perpetuate those feelings. I'm also glad to see you went w/ a flipped cruiser bars setup. I've used that a few times now and it never fails to impress (or at least feel perfect).

Got a question: what's the crankset? I'm assuming it's not anything too expensive, but it looks like a nice option. Any idea what the BCD is?

the crankset is an older campy crankset from the early eightes that i stripped the weird silver grey paint off of. so now it has an interesting shot peen finish. and i think it is a 135BCD.

Ya, the finish looks awesome now (at least in the jpeg). Was it a double before or a single?

Double. i respaced the rear end kinda weird (offset by 4mm) so i could make the ring work on the outside ring.

beautiful, next time you go to the powder shop you should get those cranks whitened.

nope i fabricated them out of 1/4" round stock.

Amazing, that C.B. arm bracket came out really great! IT nice how the top of the arm is perfectly parallel to the chainstay.

amazing! if you don't already you should think about getting some tubes and making a whole one from scratch.

then make bunches of them and sell them to us desk-jockeys with too much disposable income ;)

My wife would buy one in a heartbeat .... ask me how i know it.

Awesome. I really dig the build, and the fact that you went to the trouble of welding track ends on and respacing says alot about how much you like your wife!

Do most coaster hubs come in 110?

i have done one from scratch frame. its posted here, search for asymetric stays. i have some other projects in the works as well. they will be posted when they are ready.

Very very nice. I have a hard enough time installing a cog, so it's nice to see homebrewed frame mods that show me that if I just had a torch maybe... well, nice bike.
