Is there any structural benifit to having eyelets or no? Ive used rims with both and I never really understood the difference other than aesthetics.

Not sure about structural benefits, but they do prevent aluminum alloy nipples from freezing to the rim.

i will echo the response of "no" as I have a set. Awesome rims, but the thickness of the rim at the spoke hole is sufficient enough.

I have always preferred rims with eyelets. Not always, but they usually build up a bit nicer.

so it is safe to build areoheads! because its a toss up between these and open pros.which i know have eyelets

open pros are nice...ask juvi-kyle. He had his braces made out of them

I have been riding Open Pros for sometime now, wonderful rims. I beat the hell out of my rims and have had equal luck with DT Swiss rims and Open Pros, but the OPs weigh less. As for Velocity rims, I have actually never ridden a pair but have seen a couple pairs of aeroheads seperate(sketchy). If you do lace up some Velocity rims, just dont lace up some Deep Vs(aerodynamics really are not that cool).

I think most rims are safe to build.

how did velocity get to be the go-to rim company. IRO? san francisco? not to know em, but pinned rims w/o eyelets that cost almost as much as open pros or cxp 33s? what gives?

Well, first off... eyelets or no, they're very nice rims. And available in lots of drillings off the rack, which is nice for tinkerers. And in the deeper profiles, I'm not sure an eyelet would be feasible or useful; thus the dominance of the Deep-V. And Velocity does a pretty good job OEMing for others (from small wheelbuilders to Cane Creek and QPB's housebuilt wheels), so they're pretty much ubiquitous in the supply chain. Meanwhile Mavic had given up on affordable aftermarket rims and moved to concentrate on all-in-one wheel systems (we'll see what happens now that they have the Open Sport positioned to compete with the Aerohead).

deep Vs definitely have the Sexx Faktor, if you're into that sort of thing. And, by all accounts, their customer service is awesome. In fact, they may have invented customer service for rims. Still, if I was to spend $60 or so on a rim, it'd be on a Mavic.

i ride the open pros and i really like them..
i think the full eyelet on these rims definitely adds to their strength..
aside from strengthining the spoke hole, it is basically like a tube that goes through the rim, and i imagine it helps distribute stresses on each part of the box section..

the only problem i've had with these rims is the 'click'
the open pros are pinned or something before they are welded, and sometimes the metal bit that spans the joint comes loose so once in a while at very low speeds (walking) it might make a click sound... i've heard of people resetting it with a hammer and punch but i haven't actually been bothered enough to try yet...
this has only happened to me with one rim out of maybe 3 wheelsets

i think people like the velocity's for their colors and non machined braking surfaces among other things..
i'm sure they're a good company too..

i built a wheel with an aerohead about a month and a half -> two months ago and i haven't needed to true them at all. totally straight and right off a rushed build. A+

My everyday wheelset is a mismatched Mavic/Velocity setup (CXP-33 in the back, Aerohead in the front, both 32-hole 3-cross). Not only can you barely tell the difference visually once you remove the stickers, hey've been equally bulletproof (I did the usual nitpicking touchup on each about a thousand miles after I built them, and heven't touched them since), and they've been through thousands of miles of NYC streets, dozens of races, and even over some dirt.

Basically, as I said before I think both manufacturers make fine rims. If you're concerned, I'd say just make sure you lube whle you're building if you're concerned about nipple-rim galling in the drillings.

I've had great luck with my Aeroheads so far.

Oh.. and for the record, Pedro's rim tape will NOT make it all the way around an Aerohead.
Zefal tape will, though.

thats wierd. its a 700 rim, i dont understand what would change how much rim tape you need.
