SS Road Frames w/ Disc Tabs?
 

I'm looking for something like the Schwinn DBX or Kona Sutra (a road bike with disc brakes) as a commuter...but I'd like it to be singlespeed (but not fixed). Anyone know of road/cyclocross frame with horizontal dropouts and disc tabs (besides something custom)?

The sutra has sliding dropouts, so you can use it as a SS without resorting to a tensioner or an ENO.

or the surly Karate monkey, but that's more of a 29-er.

To use discs+ horizontal dropouts requires one of a couple of kludgey solutions to allow the brake to move forwards and backwards with the wheel. A frame with an eccentric bottom bracket is another solution to this problem, but i don't know of any stock road frames with EBB & disc brakes.

Another possibility would be putting a rigid disc fork on a standard cross frame- kona and dimension both sell nice 700c rigid disc forks & just running a v-brake in the back.

EDIT- looks like the kona sutra is just the ticket for what you want.

I tried a 29 er the other day that had EBB and disk brakes. I belive it was a Gary Fisher.

The Sutra was available as a frameset in 2005, so maybe Kona still has one lying around somewhere.

Thanks for all your help. The Sutra just might be my ticket. The largest size it comes in is 60cm, but it appears to have a sloping/relaxed geometry. I'm 6' 4" tall and currently ride a 62cm classic geometry frame. How do the Kona's typically run--big/small?

it's got a 58.5 cm TT, which might be a bit short for you.
Though it is a touring bike, so it's meant to have a more upright geometry...
That's the size I'd pick, but i'm only 6'2"

Don't you just love being tall? It's great when you need to reach something, but finding things that fit (be it cars, beds, clothes, bikes, etc.) is a pain in the rear.

I might put this ultimate foul weather commuter plan on the backburner and just find something inexpensive to get me into the SS/Fixed market. I hear that the IRO's are good values and they come in a 62cm size. And the weather here is not so bad that rim brakes will work fine. I'd prefer to get the Mark V, but it looks like the Jamie Roy is the only one with fender mounts.

the 62cm IRO only has a 59cm TT

if you want something cheap with fender eyelets, I'd suggest the KHS flite 100, aka. the Mercier KiloTT. You can pick one up on ebay for $350 shipped. it also has rack mounts.
and I think the 60cm version has a 60 cm TT (or maybe even 60.5cm)

or maybe even the Redline 9-2-5.

I'll keep an eye out for the Mercier on Ebay. The KHS site is down right now, but I found the Mercier site and the specs were similar to what you mentioned. Any other brands of SS for big people (regardless of price)?

The Mercier and the KHS are the exact same bikes with different decals and paint.

if you want SS, not fix and a more cyclocross-y setup you could also look into the Bianchi San Jose. but the biggest one only has a 58.5 TT

if you up your budget a fair bit, and want a more track-y bike, then Bareknuckles run big. they make a 62 w/ 59.5 TT
