ghetto headset installation
i decided to go diy for pressing in a new headset, since 2 lbs's flaked out on me. i built a ghetto press out of a bolt, some metal & rubber washers and a bolt, that cost the grand sum of $6. knocking out the existing cups took about 30 seconds using a metal pipe i had laying around and a hammer. pressing in the headset was easy - getting the washer and bolt aligned straight took a little doing and then the cups slid in easily. the crown race knocked on easily as well, using the rubberized handle of a screwdriver. the installation was easier than I expected - ghettopress gets 2 thumbs up.

it works ok ;)

you have a small bike

yes i do, although that picture might be deceiving - the bolt is 9" long.

I've used mine on several bikes without incident, excluding my CK headset. I didn't trust it for that.

i used this on a campy record. but then again i got it for $30 on ebay.

Nothing "ghetto" about good old creativeness and ingenuity! Pat yourself on the back and buy that person a beer! |
Glad to see this works. I've been thinking about doing it myself since I saw a thread about it in the mechanics forums.

My ghetto press is similar but I bought the 1 inch pipe couplings that center the cups over the steerer tube. Worth the extra 50 cents.

yeah, my local hardware store didn't have any suitable bushings/couplings. they would have made things a bit easier.

I did the same thing. Works great, much better that the big washers. |
