What is it with bikes and beer?

Why is it that so many professional races and events, and EVERY non-pro and dirtbag function, are sponsered and/or based around it? Why is it that reputable wrenches at reputable shops seem to be drinking it from open to close? Why is it that ex-pro racers from the '80s all have huge bellies? Is it the CARBS, or what?
Lastly, do you think it's more crucial for me to learn how to build frames and start a bike company, or learn how to build beer and open a brewery? I would be willing to do custom jobs.
Please discuss.

sXe for life?

hyperRevue 04-30-06 08:09 PM

Owning a brewery would be rad.

elmcity 04-30-06 08:11 PM

empty carbs. empty carbs. empty carbs.
that said, i gained 40 lbs. this winter, and will ride the next 2 years trying to lose it.
and if you're talking custom jobs as a brewer, i'd really like to get my hands on a barleywine brewed with wild thistle.

Just open a bike shop with a brewery in the back.

dolface 04-30-06 08:15 PM

i burned 3500 calories running yesterday, and another 3000 riding today. i'll take all the calories i can get.

plus, beer tastes good.

you should learn how to build bikes and start a bike company, and once that's off the ground, THEN start the brewery. i'm not kidding; if you could have a legit/valid connection between bikes and beer you'd make a killing.

mrbertfixy 04-30-06 08:18 PM

like new belgium brewery's fat tire beer. they sponsor the tour de fat.

genericbikedude 04-30-06 08:18 PM

anybody besides me ever get a BUI?

Gnarboots 04-30-06 09:29 PM

...barleywine w/ thistle. got it.
seriously, however, with a diet consisting of... well, basically beans, rice and beer, and a 6', 150 lb. build that hasn't changed in 10 years, i don't know what i'd do without it. nectar of the gods.
that said, framebuilding is my next venture, with brewing a past hobby that i want to ressurect. the split shop idea is good. like fat tire plus bikes... or ahearne w/ their frames and flask holder, plus beer... you get the point.

yes, yes and yes. I don't have much, but would invest in such an endeavor.

hyperRevue 04-30-06 10:09 PM

If anyone wants to come to Milwaukee to start such a venture, I will be your partner .

So they can drink enough to pretend they're lance?

Gnarboots 04-30-06 10:55 PM

EXACTLY. after nine or ten Peebs, i am winning the tour de france on the streets of anywhere, USA, at 3 a.m... and hyperRevue, if i could learn to love the winter, i'd move to milwaukee and get that s**t going with you pirates as soon as i learn to work a tig welder.

highpants 04-30-06 11:23 PM

phew. for a minute there, i thought you were complaining.

Fugazi Dave 04-30-06 11:29 PM

I love beer. I love bikes. I don't know exactly *why* they go together so well, but they do. I homebrew and I love making my bikes distinctly my own - both activities appeal to the same part of me.

Also, and I'm completely serious here, without my daily brew or two, I know for a fact that I actually begin to lose weight. It's such an integrated part of my diet, like a glass of wine is for some people, I hate to pass it up!

marqueemoon 04-30-06 11:44 PM

I love beer, but coffee goes better with bikes for me.

They're not mutually exclusive, you know.

Found out last night while riding around san francisco with my partner that the Buena Vista will serve Irish Coffees TO GO! It's the same price as when you get one inside, but twice as big! Why am I just learning this now after 10 years in the bay area?

*I realize that this isn't exactly coffee and beer going together, but it's close enough for me!

Close but no cigar. Cop in Ft Walton Beach Florida threatened me with one if I unlocked my bike. I waited a while until I was sure he had been long gone and I still rode off.

And then get volume discounts on tubing purchases because you can use them for the brew vats and bikes both.

Aeroplane 05-01-06 07:24 AM

Beer = habit that can be extremely expensive if you have particular tastes, highly enjoyable, causes euphoria and jubilation.
Bikes = ditto

youth 05-01-06 08:10 AM

i practically quit drinking a few months ago to take up smoking miscellaneous plants... but i've laid off that, and now when i drink i get drunk on 5 beers... it's awesome.
