frustrated with the fgg
is anyone else tired of all the crappy pictures on the fixedgeargallery? i know somewhere in the photo tips section it says to be creative or something, but i'm really getting sick of looking at pictures of bikes hanging off various items, buried in flower beds, or worst of all picture sets that don't even include a shot of the full bike! i appreciate that people are trying to be innovative and original, but please, i just want to see some pictures of your bike!
ps- pictures taken from 50 feet away suck too. pps- and don't forget all the bums that violate the "no people" rule. |
mostly i've just be dissapointed that the bikes arent as interesting lately. velospace is more fun but doesnt get as many bikes posted.

I think you are just experiencing an overload...once you've seen a thousand or so, its hard to find one thats unique or interesting. My interest in the FGG has waned too, I've seen enough to know what I like and what I don't like..after than it starts to loose its charm.
Its still a great resource though..and for more than just pictures of bikes. |
yea thats probably true. heh. im deffinately glad it exists, thats for sure.

maybe we have all just seen way too much stuff? there's only so far you can go with a set of lugs, steel tubes, and some paint. wheels can't get much more awesome either, really. until bikes start getting built out of lazer beams or start to become hover-bikes in some way, i think we will all be yawning for quite awhile. there's so much quantity and quality right now, we've kind of all reached our limit of awesomeness. thanks to ebay we can all have the nicest bikes around, which makes it harder on the not so nice bikes (conversions and anything odd. there is usually a thread on here just about every day about the one wonky bike posted on FGG with a tilted seat or a different set of bars than what we are used to seeing). i think our pooled aesthetic conscience has been driven to the brink of overload --- the bar has been raised as far as it can. cool paint wont cut it, disk wheels wont cut it, a nice complete build wont cut it anymore. the evidence is here though, in our forum, and it's a bit sad. there's more criticism than there is congratulations, which is a bad sign. nothing is worth infatuation anymore since we have all collectively seen all there is to see, the only thing left to do is nitpick a bike that would bave been totally sweet a year or two ago. something that was once rare is now readily available, thus dimishing it's attraction. hipsters get "jaded", cyclists get that too i think. when anyone and everyone have access to being way cool, then way cool loses it's weight and it takes more and more to become way cool. anyone can grab that njs frame from ebay, anyone can piece together the dura ace group or campy group, and we've all seen it all.
i could use some ice cream right about now. or a bike ride. |
my spokes are lasers. sucka! :D if you swing by my work this eve ill give you some wine. its not ice cream but it has more alcohol.
|
did someone say wine?
|
Track bikes are starting to remind me of high modernism.
|

|

i could use some ice cream right about now. or a bike ride. True that. now we split between LBS workers and messengers. who's the cool one now? |
when everyone is cool (or can be cool) then there is no such thing as cool, really. "cool" gets dimished since the playing field is totally level.

ps- pictures taken from 50 feet away suck too. if i can figger out how to do it (i don't have a digital camera--but my chick does), i'll post up my new ride--the frame of which'll be ready on 12 may they say. then i'm gonna get that rascal blinged. i know some o' ya'll will nitpick (since it's "burnt cherry" or somesuch--looks wine-colored to me, and is gonna rock "bright gold" deep v's with a gold headset and mustache bars! :) ) but that's ok! we all love bikes and critiquein' 'em an' all!:) find yer bliss fellers!!! don't be so down!!!!!:) |
i'm not saying i'm sick of the bikes, i'm sick of the terrible PHOTOS of the bikes. i'm still interested in looking at peoples rides, but i'd just like a clear picture of the whole bike and maybe a couple of the intersting or rare or expensive parts on the bike.
enough wiht the artsy photos! |

crappy bikes are better, and I like looking at pictures of them. The commuter pic thread is better bike porn than velospace; not that I'm against pasty emaciated model types, but I'll take a dirty bike oddly configured around a weird preference or physical ailment over a keirin bike or something.
Plus the commuter bikes are always complete, there's so many pics on fgg and velospace where they took it before they wrapped the bars. |
The pic I too k looks good on my computer, I swear. Looks like it was folded, bended (spindled, too), mutilated, and left out in the rain by my ISP before it was delivered and stuck up with elmer's glue on the gallery wall.
