72t chainring in riverside park!

was skatin' down riverside park this mornin' and this dude was pedalin' along with his kid and i did a freakin' doubletake when i saw his chainring. dude was rockin' a ****in' huge gear. i caught up with him and aksed him about it. dude was about 55 or 60 and rockin' a 72t chainring! *****fire!!! frame was a powdercoated gunmetal bianchi pista. i aksed how he climbed and he said it was mostly for ridin' in central park.

all dap to this old dude (especially since his kid looked about 7):)

Did he look fit? It almost sounds like more ignorance than anything else, as that huge a gear means you're spinning really slow, ergo it might just be for him to relax with his kid. I just can't see any reason for that other than chillin or a speed record.

i think I saw the same guy in CP a few weeks ago. Dark haired skinny guy, with a somewhat unhappy look to his face. Looks like he's seem some **** in his time? At least that's what the guy I saw made me think.

i'm gonna pansy out and start with the 60t ring.

MacG 05-08-06 10:23 AM

22t cogs are readily available from EAI and Surly, and I'm sure someone out there makes bigger ones. 72/22 would be about 86 gear inches with a 700c road tire, which isn't that extreme. On the other hand, 72/13 is about 145 gear inches. yikes.

Wasn't a speed record set on a stripped-down track bike with an 80 or so tooth ring one time back in the day? I remember seeing a picture of it sitting in a museum somewhere in this forum.

eddiebrannan 05-08-06 10:38 AM

it ain't hard to tell

onetwentyeight 05-08-06 10:49 AM

I was bidding on a 69t just for ****s and giggles a few weeks ago. I lost :(
